Chapter 7 - The Desperate Ex-Husband

Two weeks after the takeover, the downfall of Daniel Vance became the defining scandal of New York’s commercial elite.

Stripped of his executive position, his company vehicle, and his luxury penthouse, Daniel had retreated to a modest, rented two-bedroom apartment in Queens, surviving on a heavily restricted severance allowance that my newly appointed corporate trustees audited down to the penny.

His father, Arthur Vance, had resigned from all corporate boards in disgrace, retiring to an obscure golf community in Florida to escape the relentless press coverage.

Every major bank on Wall Street had blacklisted Daniel from executive management, terrified of crossing Nicholas Maro’s expansive financial web.

Meanwhile, Lily and I had remained in the safe, luxurious sanctuary of Nicholas’s Fifth Avenue estate.

Under the loving, maternal care of Nonna Rosa and the constant, invisible protection of Nicholas’s security detail, my body had fully healed from the trauma of labor.

Lily had gained two pounds, her chubby cheeks glowing with radiant health, her nursery filled with soft cashmere blankets, hand-carved wooden toys, and personalized storybooks that Nicholas personally ordered from London.

Every evening, the most feared crime boss in New York would return to the penthouse, strip off his tailored suit jacket, and sit by the fireplace with Lily resting against his broad chest, softly humming Italian lullabies until she drifted off to sleep.

The man who terrified district attorneys and rival syndicates had become entirely, beautifully defenseless in the presence of my daughter.

On a cold, crisp Thursday afternoon, I traveled to the Manhattan Family Court building accompanied by Viktor and two armed security operatives to finalize the official issuance of Lily’s new birth certificate.

As we walked through the grand marble lobby toward the exit, a disheveled, frantic figure suddenly lunged from behind a stone pillar.

“Ava! Ava, please, stop!”

Daniel Vance stood before us, looking aged by fifteen years. His designer suit was wrinkled and stained, his hair wild and unkempt, and his nose was crooked, held together by a thick medical splint.

Before he could take two steps toward me, Viktor moved with lightning speed, slamming his open palm against Daniel’s chest and driving the disgraced executive hard against the marble wall.

Viktor’s hand clamped around Daniel’s throat, his eyes cold and lethal. “One more step toward the Donna, and you leave this courthouse in an ambulance.”

“Viktor, wait,” I said calmly, stepping forward while holding Lily securely in her leather carrier.

Viktor released his grip slightly, allowing Daniel to slide down the wall, gasping for air as he rubbed his bruised neck.

Daniel looked up at me, his eyes bloodshot and filled with a nauseating mixture of desperation, humiliation, and greed.

“Ava... please,” Daniel begged, his voice cracking into a high-pitched whine. “You have to talk to Maro. He’s liquidating my personal trust funds! I have nothing left! I’m living in a rat-infested walk-up in Astoria!”

I looked down at the man I had once thought I loved, feeling absolutely nothing inside my chest: no anger, no hatred, and no lingering grief. He had simply become an irrelevant, pathetic ghost.

“You told me I was hardly suffering when you left me in that hospital bed, Daniel,” I replied, my voice steady, clear, and utterly devoid of pity.

“You told me a daughter was an expensive liability.”

“I was out of my mind! I was under so much corporate pressure from my father!” he cried out, tears ruining his unshaven face. “Look at her, Ava... she’s my daughter! I have a right to hold my child! I can change! We can be a real family again!”

A sharp, amused chuckle echoed from the entrance of the lobby.

Daniel froze, all the color draining from his skin as Nicholas Maro stepped through the revolving doors, flanked by four federal security agents.
