Chapter 5 - The Handover of the Crown

Judge Vance turned his back on the chaotic stage and stepped up to where I stood in the center aisle.

From his breast pocket, he withdrew a heavy, ornate brass key adorned with an engraved falcon holding a quill—the historic seal of the Whitmore family.

Beside him, his legal assistant held out a leather-bound folder containing the executive transfer charters.

"Lady Evelyn," Judge Vance said, his voice carrying the solemn gravity of fifty years of judicial service.

"As the sole surviving heir of Samuel Whitmore, the board of trustees officially recognizes your sovereignty over all corporate holdings, private accounts, and real estate parcels."

He offered the brass key to me with both hands, bowing his head in deep respect.

"Ashford Tower, the corporate fleet, the private accounts in Zurich and Manhattan—they are yours, as they were always meant to be."

I reached out, my fingers wrapping around the cold, heavy brass of the antique key.

The metal felt familiar, grounding me, as if my grandfather’s calloused hand were resting gently over mine, guiding me through the fire.

"Thank you, Judge Vance," I said, my voice steady and clear as I accepted the documents.

"I am ready."

On the stage, Nathaniel dropped to his knees, his hands trembling as he stared down at the marble floor where he had thrown his wedding ring moments earlier.

"Evelyn..." Nathaniel wept, his voice cracking into a ragged, pathetic sob that echoed across the room.

"Evelyn, please... look at me! We were married for four years! I was confused! Vanessa seduced me—she told me she was on birth control!"

Vanessa gasped, lunging forward to slap Nathaniel across the face with a resounding crack that made half the audience wince.

"You liar!" Vanessa roared, tears ruining her expensive makeup.

"You begged me to have your baby! You told me Evelyn was barren and useless!"

Nathaniel ignored her, crawling on his hands and knees to the edge of the stage, looking down at me with bloodshot, pleading eyes.

"Evelyn, please! Think of our vows! Think of what we built together! You can't leave me with nothing!"

I walked slowly toward the edge of the stage, stopping directly beneath where he knelt in the dust.

I looked down at the man who had ordered me to fall to my knees before his mistress, who had mocked my mother's dress and thrown his ring like trash.

I reached down, picked up the platinum wedding band he had hurled at my feet, and held it up between two fingers.

"You told me this marriage was worth exactly what I brought into it, Nathaniel," I whispered, loud enough for his mother and his mistress to hear every word.

"You were right. It was worth everything."

I opened my fingers, letting the platinum ring slip from my hand.

It struck the marble with a dull, hollow clink, rolled two inches, and stopped against the toe of Nathaniel’s polished shoe.

"You have twenty-four hours to vacate my penthouse, Nathaniel," I said, looking him dead in the eye.

"And take your mistress with you. You two deserve each other."
