Chapter 2 - The Man with the Silver Cane

A ripple of uncomfortable laughter rolled through the crowd, led by Margaret’s dismissive clucking.

"The poor girl has lost her mind," Margaret declared, waving her diamond-crusted hand at the hotel security guards stationed by the pillars.

"Security, remove this woman from our private gala immediately. She is disturbing our celebration."

Two burly guards in black suits stepped forward from the perimeter, adjusting their earpieces as they approached me.

Before either man could lay a finger on my black dress, the massive ten-foot mahogany double doors of the ballroom swung open with a resounding bang.

Every single head in the room whipped around.

A cold gust of October air swept through the opening, fluttering the white linen tablecloths.

Walking through the doorway was an elderly gentleman in a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit, his posture rigid and commanding despite his silver hair.

He leaned lightly on a polished ebony cane topped with a solid silver falcon head, his cold blue eyes sweeping the room like searchlights.

Flanking him were four armed private security officers in tactical gear, followed by two men carrying heavy leather legal briefcases.

Nathaniel frowned, stepping to the edge of the stage, his eyebrows knitting in annoyance.

"Excuse me, sir! This is a private corporate function for Ashford Holdings! Who authorized you to disrupt this event?"

The old man didn't stop walking.

The rhythmic thud-click of his ebony cane against the polished stone floor was the only sound in the cavernous room.

When he reached the center aisle, twenty feet from the stage, he stopped and looked up at Nathaniel with pure, unadulterated disdain.

"I authorized myself, Nathaniel," the old man said, his gravelly voice carrying an unmistakable authority that made several retired judges in the audience instantly straighten up.

"And as for Ashford Holdings, you are currently standing on real estate that hasn't belonged to your family in fifty-four years."

Margaret Ashford gasped, her champagne glass slipping through her fingers and shattering against the marble.

"Judge Vance...?" she whispered, her face draining of every ounce of rouge.

"The Honorable Arthur Vance? What are you doing here?"

Arthur Vance—the retired chief justice of the Seventh Circuit Court and the most terrifying trust administrator in Illinois—ignored the matriarch completely.

He turned toward me, bowed his head with profound, old-world reverence, and spoke words that turned the room into a tomb.

"Good evening, Lady Evelyn. On behalf of the Whitmore Sovereign Trust, I apologize for the delay. The audit is complete."
