Chapter 6 - The Oslo Boardroom

The executive conference hall of the NordTech complex in Oslo overlooked the freezing, blue-black waters of the Oslofjord.

Floor-to-ceiling glass walls reflected the crisp Nordic morning light across a polished granite table large enough for forty delegates.

At the head of the table sat Chairman Erik Lindqvist, a legendary Norwegian industrialist with piercing gray eyes and a reputation for absolute integrity.

Ethan and Julian Reynolds, Sophia’s father, sat on the left wing of the table, flanked by four nervous corporate attorneys.

Julian Reynolds was a corpulent, red-faced man in his sixties, sweating through his stiff collar, while Ethan sat rigidly, staring at his trembling fingers.

Sophia was not allowed in the room; she was waiting in the lobby, barred from the presentation due to her pending federal indictment in New York.

At exactly nine o'clock, the double glass doors swung open.

I walked into the hall accompanied by my mother, Lady Margaret Sterling, and our senior engineering consortium heads.

I wore an exquisite midnight-blue silk dress beneath an ivory cape, radiating the effortless, regal confidence of a woman who held every trump card.

Chairman Lindqvist stood up immediately, offering a deep, respectful bow to my mother and me.

"Lady Margaret. Director Sterling. It is an honor to welcome the house of Sterling back to the Nordic infrastructure tables."

Ethan’s jaw dropped slightly, watching his wife receive the kind of deference usually reserved for visiting heads of state.

"Chairman Lindqvist," Julian Reynolds spoke up, clearing his throat loudly in an attempt to reassert his presence.

"We appreciate the committee's time. The Reynolds-Vance consortium has submitted an aggressive, highly competitive bid for the smart-grid logistics—"

"Mr. Reynolds," Chairman Lindqvist interrupted, his voice dropping into a flat, icy baritone.

"Before we review your technical specifications, the ethics committee must address certain urgent developments."

Lindqvist tapped his tablet, and the massive display screens along the wall illuminated with official documents from the United States District Court.

The screen displayed the unsealed criminal referral naming Reynolds International and Vance Holdings in active corporate espionage and financial manipulation.

Beside it was the certified forensic audit proving Sophia Reynolds had used corporate funds to pay smear merchants.

Julian Reynolds’s face turned an alarming shade of mottled purple, his hands clawing at his leather portfolio.

"Chairman! These are baseless civil allegations manufactured by our competitors to bias this committee!"

"Are they baseless, Mr. Reynolds?" I asked, stepping up to the podium, my voice smooth and commanding.

"The New York State Attorney General issued formal grand jury subpoenas for your banking records two hours ago."

I turned the page on my digital console, projecting our counter-proposal onto the screen.

"Sterling-Hart Global offers a fully funded, sovereign-backed infrastructure consortium with zero debt leverage."

"We are pledging three hundred million euros in direct liquidity from our family foundation, backed by thirty years of flawless maritime compliance."

Chairman Lindqvist looked at the numbers, then turned his gaze toward Ethan, his expression filled with cold disgust.

"Mr. Vance," Lindqvist said quietly.

"Is it true that your company is facing a thirty-four-million-dollar debt acceleration default in seventy-two hours?"

Ethan swallowed hard, unable to meet the Chairman's eyes.

"We... we are in negotiations to restructure our private obligations, sir," Ethan stammered, his voice cracking.

"The debt is held by Sterling-Hart, Chairman Lindqvist," I announced clearly to the entire room.

"And as Chief Executive Officer, I can confirm that there are no negotiations."

"Vance Holdings will enter judicial receivership tomorrow morning at twelve-fifteen."

Julian Reynolds let out a strangled, furious cry, spinning around to shove Ethan’s shoulder with both hands.

"You lied to me, you coward!" Reynolds roared across the table.

"You told me your wife had no teeth! You told me your family was untouchable!"

"Gentlemen!" Chairman Lindqvist barked, slamming his palm against the granite.

"Security, remove the Reynolds-Vance delegation from these premises."

Lindqvist turned to my mother and me, his stern face breaking into a warm, decisive smile.

"Director Sterling," Lindqvist said, extending his hand.

"The NordTech contract belongs to Sterling-Hart."
