Chapter 3 - The Cease and Desist

By two o'clock in the afternoon, the transatlantic telephone lines at Sterling-Hart were flashing red.

Ethan had finally tracked down where his wife had vanished after finding our Manhattan penthouse stripped of Lily’s crib and clothes.

When his personal calls failed to connect, he dialed our corporate switchboard, demanding to speak with human resources.

"Put me through to Elena!" Ethan’s voice boomed through the speakerphone in my private conference room.

"I know she’s there! Tell her she has twenty-four hours to bring my daughter back to New York or I'm calling the FBI for international parental kidnapping!"

Sitting across from me was Sir Reginald Vance—no relation to Ethan, but one of London’s most ruthless cross-border family barristers.

Sir Reginald leaned toward the microphone, tapping an unlit Havana cigar against the mahogany table.

"Mr. Vance, this is Sir Reginald Vance of Kingsley & Vance Chambers, London," the barrister said with icy precision.

"You are currently speaking on an encrypted, legally recorded corporate line."

Ethan choked on his words, his aggressive posture faltering for a split second across the Atlantic.

"Who the hell are you? Put my wife on the phone!"

"Mrs. Elena Sterling does not take calls from individuals under active criminal investigation," Sir Reginald replied smoothly.

"What criminal investigation? Are you insane?" Ethan yelled, his voice cracking with rising panic.

"At eleven-fifteen last night, you committed an aggravated physical assault against Mrs. Sterling in the presence of forty-eight patrons at Le Cirque," Sir Reginald read from the docket.

"We have secured the restaurant’s high-definition security footage, three sworn affidavits from waitstaff, and the attending physician’s medical trauma report."

Ethan went completely silent on the line, the reality of his public violence finally catching up to him.

"Elena..." Ethan whispered, his tone suddenly shifting into that familiar, wheedling cadence he used whenever he needed to manipulate me.

"Elena, please. It was an accident. Sophia slipped, you were yelling, and I lost my temper for one second. You can't take Lily away over an argument!"

"I was silent, Ethan," I said, leaning toward the receiver, my voice steady as steel.

"You slapped me because you wanted to prove to Sophia that your wife meant nothing to you."

"Elena, listen to me—"

"You will receive our formal petition for dissolution of marriage by courier this afternoon," I continued without hesitation.

"We are filing in the High Court of Justice in London, pursuant to our prenuptial jurisdictional clause."

"What prenuptial clause?" Ethan stammered.

"We didn't sign a prenuptial agreement!"

"No, Ethan," I said with a faint, cold chuckle.

"You didn't sign one because you thought I was an unemployed administrative clerk living off your generosity."

"My family trust signed the covenant that funded your company's initial mezzanine debt four years ago."

"Under Clause Nineteen, any physical abuse or domestic violence committed against the trust beneficiary triggers an immediate, unilateral debt acceleration."

Ethan gasped, the sound of papers rustling frantically in his New York office audible through the line.

"You... you lent me the thirty million for the warehouse acquisitions?"

"I didn't lend it to you, Ethan," I replied, standing up to look out over the London skyline.

"I bought your debt. And as of noon today, my bank has called the note due in full."

"You have seven business days to wire thirty-four point two million dollars, including accrued penalties."

"If you fail to pay, we seize your company's accounts receivable and place Vance Holdings into emergency receivership."

"Elena, you can't do this!" Ethan shrieked, panic completely overwhelming his arrogance.

"This will bankrupt me! Sophia and I are closing the NordTech contract next week!"

"Then you better hope Sophia’s family has thirty million dollars to spare," I said softly.

"Because I won't give you another penny."

I pressed the disconnect button, cutting off his frantic screams, and turned to Sir Reginald.

"Proceed with the Hague Convention defense, Reggie. Make sure he never gets within a thousand yards of my child again."
