Chapter 7 - The Collapse of Vanessa Lane

While Grant was adjusting to the reality of a seven-year federal prison sentence, Vanessa Lane’s world was crumbling with cinematic speed.

Her high-end interior design firm on Newbury Street—once the playground of Boston’s wealthy elite—was raided by the IRS Criminal Investigation Division the following morning. Federal agents wheeled out dozens of filing cabinets and servers while camera crews from local news stations broadcast the raid live on daytime television.

Vanessa was released on house arrest after her estranged parents mortgaged their modest home in New Hampshire to post her bond. But freedom behind an ankle monitor was its own special hell.

Her high-profile clients abandoned her in droves. Prominent socialites who had fawned over her design aesthetic immediately canceled their contracts, terrified of being linked to the money-laundering scandal. Lawsuits rained down on her from every direction: vendors who had not been paid, landlords demanding back rent on her luxury showroom, and a direct civil suit filed by my estate for the return of all diverted funds.

On a rainy Thursday afternoon, my phone buzzed. It was an unrecognized number.

I answered.

"Emma?"

The voice was hollow, trembling, stripped of all the venom and mocking superiority she had displayed in my kitchen while standing on my daughter’s ultrasound photograph.

"Vanessa," I said coldly. "You are violating the temporary restraining order simply by placing this call."

"Please don't hang up," she wept, her voice cracking into breathless sobs. "Please, I’m begging you. The lawyers... they're taking everything. My car, my apartment, my business accounts. I have nothing left! They told me I’m facing five years in Danbury!"

"You should have considered the consequences before you put on my mother’s coat and walked into my home," I replied, standing by the French doors of my living room, watching the rain wash over the courtyard garden.

"Grant told me you were nothing!" she screamed through her tears. "He told me you were weak! He told me the money was his and that you were just an empty vessel who trapped him with a pregnancy! He lied to me, Emma! He used me!"

"You weren't used, Vanessa. You were an eager accomplice," I said, my voice steady and completely devoid of pity. "You smiled when you looked at my swollen mouth. You stepped on my baby's first picture with your red heel and smiled. You didn't care about the truth. You only cared about stealing a life you hadn't earned."

"What do you want from me?" she wailed. "I gave the bracelet back! I gave the coat back!"

"I don't want anything from you," I said softly. "The justice system will take everything that is required. Don't ever call this number again."

May you like

I terminated the call and immediately blocked the number, handing the digital log to David to forward to the prosecutor for a bail violation hearing.

Vanessa Lane had thought she was stepping into a fairy tale of stolen wealth and glamour. Instead, she had walked straight into the gears of a legal machine built to grind predators into dust.
