Chapter 2 - The Red Flash

"Boston Police! Nobody move! Hands where we can see them!"

The hallway flooded with heavy boot steps and the sharp rattle of tactical gear. Four uniformed officers swept into the kitchen with practiced speed, their hands resting firmly on the holsters of their service weapons. The officer in the lead—a broad-shouldered sergeant with graying temples—took in the scene in a fraction of a second: the shattered mug, the blood trickling down my jaw, the terrified mistress backing into the pantry door, and Grant standing over a heavily pregnant woman with his fist clenched.

"Step away from the table, sir," the sergeant commanded, his voice like iron. "Right now. Step back toward the sink and get your hands on your head."

"Do you have any idea who I am?" Grant snarled, his arrogance briefly flaring back to life as he puffed out his chest. "I am Grant Whitaker. I sit on the board of the City Civic League. I personally fund half the outreach programs in this district! My wife is having an emotional breakdown due to postpartum depression—"

"I am eight months pregnant, Officer," I interrupted calmly, gesturing toward the monitor. "Postpartum does not apply. And the entire assault was captured on audio by your dispatch, as well as on high-definition video via that camera on the counter."

The second officer stepped briskly between Grant and me, using his arm to forcefully direct Grant backward against the marble backsplash. "I said hands on your head, Mr. Whitaker. Don't make me repeat it a third time."

Grant’s face twisted into an ugly, mottled shade of crimson, but the physical presence of the two towering patrolmen finally pierced his delusion. Slowly, trembling with humiliation, he laced his fingers behind his skull.

Meanwhile, a female officer approached Vanessa, who was trembling so violently that her teeth chattered. "Ma'am, please step away from the doorway and keep your hands visible. Who does this residence belong to?"

"I... I was invited," Vanessa stammered, tears now smudging her heavy mascara. "Grant brought me here! He gave me the key! I didn't know she was going to be here, I swear to God!"

"Whose coat is that?" the female officer asked, observing the initials 'E.W.' delicately embroidered in gold silk thread along the inside lining of the collar, which had turned outward when Vanessa pulled it tight.

"It belongs to my deceased mother, Evelyn Whitaker," I said clearly. "And the diamond bracelet on her right wrist is registered under the Whitaker Family Estate, Policy Number 4482-B. There is a police report pending for unauthorized removal of estate property, filed by my attorney at midnight."

"Take it off," the officer instructed Vanessa, unhooking a pair of handcuffs from her utility belt.

"No, wait! You can't treat me like this!" Vanessa shrieked as the officer grabbed her wrist, carefully sliding the glittering diamond bracelet off her arm and dropping it into an evidence bag before clicking steel cuffs around her manicured wrists. "Grant! Tell them! Tell them you bought it for me!"

Grant kept his eyes shut tight, refusing to look at her. His empire of cards was tumbling down in the center of the kitchen he had bragged about remodeling in Architectural Digest.

"Ma'am, we have EMTs waiting outside to check on you and the baby," the sergeant said gently, leaning down toward me.

"I need to stand up," I said softly, using the edge of the heavy oak table for support. As I rose, the gray folder remained firmly tucked under my arm.

"What is that folder?" Grant hissed between gritted teeth, his voice shaking as the officers pulled his arms behind his back and clicked a heavy set of cuffs around his wrists. "Emma, what did your lawyer give you?"

May you like

I looked directly into his eyes, feeling nothing—no sorrow, no grief, only an icy, crystal clarity that had been missing for over a decade.

"Everything," I said quietly. "Every offshore account in Grand Cayman. Every fraudulent wire transfer from my trust to Vanessa's interior design firm. And the original deed to this house, which was never in your name to begin with. You aren't being arrested just for domestic assault, Grant. You're being arrested for grand larceny."
