Chapter 7 - The Confrontation at the Marina

"Arthur," I said when the deep, weathered voice answered on the third ring. "I’m sorry to wake you, but you need to listen very carefully."

For ten minutes, I laid out the entire operation with surgical precision: the forged Delaware LLC, the fabricated signatures on the commercial bonds, the siphoning of over two million dollars from his private foundation, and the pending departure of his golden boy from Gate B12 at the international airport.

There was a long, terrifying silence on the other end of the line. Arthur Vance was a man who commanded billion-dollar consortiums without ever raising his voice. When he finally spoke, his tone was colder than an Arctic glacier.

"Claire," Arthur said quietly, "did you suffer any physical harm?"

"No, Arthur. I am entirely safe."

"Good," the old man replied, his voice trembling with quiet, righteous fury. "Because Daniel Miller’s career as a consultant—and as a free man—ends today. I am patching my general counsel directly to the Federal Magistrate. Don't go to the airport, Claire. Go to the marina. That’s where he’ll run when the gate agents stop him."

"The marina?"

"Daniel keeps a thirty-eight-foot cabin cruiser berthed at the South Shore Yacht Basin," Arthur revealed. "He purchased it six months ago under the LLC. He keeps it fully fueled and provisioned. If he smells the trap at the airport, he won't try to drive across state lines; he’ll run for international waters."

Arthur was right. A man with an offshore passport and liquid assets always had a secondary contingency.

I redirected my car toward the South Shore Marina, parking on the upper bluff overlooking the private boat slips. From my vantage point behind the tinted windows, I had an unobstructed view of Pier 4, where Daniel’s luxury vessel, The Alibi, was moored.

At six-twenty, my phone received a text alert from Marcus: Terminal alert triggered. Airport police approached Daniel and Laura at the TSA PreCheck line. Laura was detained immediately without incident. Daniel dropped his carry-on bag, ducked through an emergency exit into the short-term parking garage, and stole a parked rental sedan.

He had abandoned his pregnant mistress the very second the handcuffs came out.

Ten minutes later, a screech of tires echoed across the asphalt of the marina parking lot. A nondescript silver sedan blew through the security gate, crashing through the wooden barrier arm, and skidded to a halt at the foot of Pier 4.

Daniel stumbled out of the car.

He looked unhinged. His expensive suit jacket was gone, his white dress shirt torn at the collar and drenched in sweat, his hair wild and disheveled. He clutched a leather briefcase to his chest as he sprinted down the wooden floating dock toward The Alibi.

He leaped onto the stern of the boat, fumbling frantically with the ignition keys.

"Looking for these?" I called out.

Daniel spun around, nearly losing his footing on the slick teak deck.

I was standing on the dock ten feet away, holding up the master ignition key and the fuel shutoff valve pin I had removed twenty minutes ago with the help of the harbor master.

Daniel stared at me, his chest heaving, his face contorted in a horrifying mixture of rage, disbelief, and complete breakdown.

"Claire!" he screamed, his voice cracking like dry wood. "Give me the keys! Give them to me right now! Do you have any idea what you’ve done? They arrested Laura! The FBI is at the office! They’re freezing everything!"

"I know," I said calmly, stepping back out of his reach. "I gave them the files, Daniel."

"You destroyed me!" he roared, lunging toward the edge of the gunwale, his eyes bloodshot and wild. "Eleven years! I gave you a home! I gave you a life! You were nothing before me! Just an introverted girl working in a cubicle! I made you who you are!"

"No, Daniel," I replied, my voice carrying clearly over the gentle lapping of the harbor waves. "You took credit for who I was. You built your entire career on the ideas I outlined for you, the business plans I edited for you, and the money my mother left behind. You stole my past, but you will never touch my future."

"Give me the keys, Claire! I'm warning you!" he shrieked, preparing to jump onto the dock.

Before his feet could leave the deck, two black tactical SUVs roared down the pier access ramp, their blue and red emergency strobes cutting through the morning mist. Four armed federal agents leaped out with weapons drawn.

"Daniel Miller! Step away from the controls and put your hands on your head! Do it now!"

Daniel froze. He looked at the agents. He looked at the deep, cold water of the harbor. Then, he looked at me.

May you like

The realization finally crashed over him like a tidal wave: there was no escape, no Cabo vacation, no offshore millions, and no devoted wife waiting at home to forgive his lies.

Slowly, pathetically, Daniel dropped the leather briefcase onto the deck, sank to his knees, and placed his trembling hands behind his head.
