Chapter 5 - Two Tickets to Cabo

I left the St. James Yacht Club without looking back once. The cool ocean breeze felt clean and invigorating against my skin, washing away eleven years of accumulated dust and deception.

Instead of driving back to the house on Elm Street, I drove to the extended-stay executive hotel downtown where I had already booked a private suite under my maiden name. My packed suitcases were already sitting in the closet, moved earlier that afternoon with the help of two professional movers while Daniel was at his office.

I sat at the mahogany desk in the suite, opened my laptop, and dialed Marcus via an encrypted video call.

Marcus’s face popped onto the screen, surrounded by dual monitors displaying complex financial wireframes. "I watched the remote server traffic, Claire. The moment you walked out of that dining club, both of Daniel’s corporate accounts went into overdrive. He’s in full panic mode."

"Is he trying to liquidate?" I asked.

"Faster than a sinking ship," Marcus chuckled dryly. "He just attempted three separate transfers totaling one point eight million dollars from the Vance Holdings offshore escrow account to a private numbered account in the Bahamas. But here’s the kicker: the transfer requires dual-factor authorization from the account guarantor."

"And who is the listed guarantor?"

"On paper, it was registered under Daniel’s name and his legal spouse. When he set up the shell three years ago, he forged your digital signature to satisfy the offshore bank’s marital asset compliance rules. He thought tying you to the account would protect the funds from commercial seizure in the event of an audit."

I smiled—a slow, genuine smile. "So he made me a fifty-percent co-owner of his stolen escape hatch."

"Exactly," Marcus said, tapping his keyboard. "Which means neither party can move more than ten thousand dollars without the other party’s biometric or cryptographic token. He’s completely locked out. He can see the money on his dashboard, but he can't touch a single dime."

"What about Laura?"

"Laura is smarter than your husband, but far more desperate," Marcus reported. "Her bank’s internal fraud detection division received an anonymous tip thirty minutes ago—courtesy of our secure drop—regarding unauthorized risk overrides on three commercial development bonds. Internal security just revoked her administrative credentials and locked down her executive office on Fifth Avenue. She’s currently packing her personal belongings under the watchful eye of two security guards."

I leaned back in the ergonomic leather chair, feeling a profound sense of closure beginning to take root. For months, I had felt powerless, wondering why my body was failing to conceive, wondering why my husband seemed so distant, wondering what I had done wrong to make our marriage feel like an empty hallway.

I had done nothing wrong. I had simply shared a home with a parasite.

My personal cell phone buzzed on the desk. It was an automated notification from our shared travel booking portal.

*Booking Confirmation: Two First-Class Tickets to Cabo San Lucas.*

*Departure: Tomorrow, 6:45 AM.*

*Passengers: Daniel Miller & Laura Hayes.*

Daniel had bought the tickets three days ago, right around the time he ordered the white roses and pink peonies. He had planned to fly his pregnant mistress to Mexico for an extravagant weekend getaway, leaving me at home to water the plants and wonder why he had to attend another emergency corporate retreat.

He hadn't canceled the flights. In his frantic, delusional mind, he still believed he could salvage his secondary life, grab his mistress, access his offshore accounts from an international terminal, and disappear into the warm Mexican sun before the domestic authorities could unravel his paperwork.

I clicked on the reservation portal. Because the tickets were booked through our joint premier loyalty account, I had full administrative control over the itinerary.

I didn't cancel the tickets.

Instead, I logged into the airline's executive concierge service, entered my personal credit card, and upgraded the entire reservation package. I added priority international customs clearance, requested an executive greeting service at the gate, and ensured that their names were prominently displayed on the manifest for Flight 412.

Then, I forwarded the updated flight confirmation, along with Daniel’s passport details and the Delaware grand jury complaint draft Marcus had prepared, directly to the Special Agent-in-Charge at Homeland Security’s Financial Crimes Division at the regional international airport.

Daniel wanted an unforgettable weekend in Cabo with his mistress.

I was more than happy to make sure he had a welcoming committee worthy of the occasion.
