Chapter 6 - The Key Under the Mat

At four in the morning, while the rest of the city slept, I drove to the townhouse on Evergreen Terrace.

The gated community was completely deserted, the manicured lawns and stately brick homes bathed in the soft glow of gas-lit carriage lamps. I parked my hybrid sedan around the corner and walked up the stone pathway of unit 14B.

I didn't need to break in. According to the property management invoice I had found in Daniel’s glovebox, the spare key was kept in an ornamental fake rock beneath the hydrangea bush near the front porch. I reached into the damp mulch, retrieved the magnetic key case, and unlocked the heavy mahogany front door.

Stepping inside felt like crossing into an alternate reality.

The entryway was decorated with framed photographs. Not stock art, but high-resolution portraits of Daniel and Laura laughing on a beach, clinking wine glasses at a vineyard, celebrating Christmas in front of a stone fireplace. In every photo, Daniel wore the same bright, adoring smile he used to give me when we were in our twenties.

The living room was furnished with pieces I recognized from high-end catalogs Daniel claimed we couldn't afford. A custom velvet sofa. A seven-thousand-dollar audio system. On the kitchen island sat a silver ice bucket chilling a bottle of Dom Pérignon, surrounded by baby shower catalogs and paint swatches for a nursery in shades of soft blue and sage green.

I walked into the master bedroom. The closet door was open. Hanging neatly inside were dozens of Daniel’s designer suits, silk ties, and custom shirts—an entire secondary wardrobe he had accumulated over two years under the pretense of "keeping a change of clothes at the corporate gym."

On the nightstand rested a leather-bound journal.

I picked it up and flipped through the pages. It was written in Daniel’s neat, deliberate handwriting. It wasn't a diary of romance; it was a meticulous ledger of deceit.

*January 12: Transferred $45k from Claire’s inheritance trust into Vance shell. Claire suspected nothing, assumed it was a standard index rebalancing.*

*March 4: Laura confirmed loan clearance. Moving $120k into offshore escrow. Need to accelerate divorce timeline once the South Shore bond closes.*

*July 19: Claire’s IVF round failed again. Good. A child with Claire would complicate the asset division. Keep encouraging her to take time off work to keep her isolated.*

Reading those cold, callous words did not break my heart. It incinerated the very last fragment of warmth I had ever harbored for the man. He hadn't just cheated; he had actively celebrated my heartbreak, using my grief as a tactical weapon to keep me docile while he systematically robbed the inheritance my late mother had left for me.

My mother, who had held Daniel’s hand on her deathbed and called him the son she never had.

"You arrogant bastard," I whispered into the quiet bedroom, snapping clear photos of every single entry in the journal.

I closed the notebook, placed it precisely where I had found it, and walked down to the basement level.

Behind the furnace was a small digital floor safe, bolted directly into the concrete slab. In Daniel’s journal, on the very last page, he had scribbled a reminder: Safe code: 11-14-26. The estimated due date of Laura’s child.

I entered the numbers. The electronic lock beeped twice and disengaged with a solid mechanical thunk.

I pulled open the heavy steel door. Inside were two black velvet pouches containing hundreds of thousands of dollars in bearer bonds, four gold bullion bars, Daniel’s secondary European passport, and a USB flash drive labeled South Shore Private Ledger.

I didn't take the bonds. I didn't touch the gold. Taking them would make me a party to theft in the eyes of a criminal court, and I had no intention of jeopardizing my spotless legal standing.

Instead, I took the USB drive, plugged it into my encrypted tablet, and initiated a complete byte-for-byte clone of its contents. The drive contained every fraudulent invoice, every internal communication, and every secret offshore routing code Daniel had used to embezzle funds from his investors and Arthur Vance.

Once the copy was verified, I replaced the USB drive, closed the safe, and spun the electronic dial.

I walked back out of the townhouse, placed the spare key back into the fake stone, and set it beneath the hydrangea bush.

As I pulled out of the gated community, my dashboard clock read five-fifteen.

Daniel and Laura’s flight was scheduled to depart at six-forty-five. They were likely arriving at the international terminal right now, luggage in tow, believing they were about to slip away into the sunset.

I picked up my hands-free receiver and called Arthur Vance’s personal sat-phone in Alaska. It was early, but for what was about to happen, the old man deserved to hear it from me first.
