Chapter 8 - The Price of Treason

The aftermath at Grandview Manor was swift and brutal. Within twenty minutes, the two hundred elite guests had fled the property as if it were on fire, eager to distance their reputations from the flaming wreckage of Grant Sterling’s social standing. The expensive catering staff began packing away unused silver platters, and the floral designers quietly began dismantling arches of exotic orchids that had never been paid for.

Savannah sat slumped on the stone steps of the terrace, her luxurious lace train soaked in spilled champagne and garden mud. Her mother, Eleanor, was pacing back and forth beside her, screaming furiously into her smartphone at Grant’s criminal defense lawyers, who had already informed her that Grant’s retainers had bounced and they would not be representing him.

I stood by the edge of the fountain, waiting for Arthur Vance to finish speaking with the county sheriff who was securing the estate premises.

When Savannah finally looked up and saw me standing there—composed, elegant, and completely untouched by the catastrophe—the last remnants of her arrogance erupted into feral rage. She struggled to her feet, holding her heavy abdomen, and stormed toward me.

""You did this!"" she hissed, her mascara running in black streaks down her pale, blotchy cheeks. ""You knew the police were coming! You sat there in the back row like a vulture, waiting to watch him get dragged away! You ruined my child’s future! You ruined my life!""

""I didn't steal twenty-two million dollars from hard-working people, Savannah,"" I answered, my voice steady and cold. ""Grant did. And you were so blinded by greed, so intoxicated by the idea of stealing another woman’s husband and wealth, that you never stopped to ask where that money came from.""

""I loved him!"" she cried, though the excuse sounded pathetically fragile.

""You loved his black credit cards,"" I countered. ""You loved flaunting that ring in my face at the boutique. You loved the idea of conquering a life you didn't build. If you truly loved him, you would have asked questions when he asked you to marry him on the exact day his financial audit was due.""

At that moment, two plainclothes investigators from the asset forfeiture division approached the terrace, accompanied by a female deputy.

""Savannah Sterling?"" the investigator asked.

Savannah flinched at the surname she had coveted for so long. ""What do you want now? They already took him!""

""Under the federal forfeiture order issued against the assets of Grant Sterling, we are required to seize all high-value items, vehicles, and jewelry purchased with diverted corporate funds over the preceding twenty-four months,"" the investigator stated calmly, pulling a pair of white latex gloves from his pocket. ""That includes the vehicle you drove here today, your designer accessories, and the five-carat oval diamond engagement ring currently on your finger.""

Savannah clutched her left hand to her chest, her eyes wide with horrified disbelief. ""No! This was a gift! A personal engagement ring cannot be seized!""

""It can when it was paid for via a fraudulent wire transfer directly from an employee pension account,"" the officer replied, stepping closer. ""Please remove the ring voluntarily, ma'am, or we will be forced to cite you for contempt and take possession manually.""

""Mom!"" Savannah shrieked, turning toward Eleanor. ""Mom, do something!""

Eleanor Cole looked at the federal agents, then looked at her weeping daughter, and took a slow, deliberate step backward. Eleanor was a survivor of her own selfish design; she knew when an investment had gone to zero. ""Give them the ring, Savannah,"" Eleanor muttered coldly, looking away. ""Don't make this worse.""

With trembling, hysterical sobs, Savannah twisted the heavy platinum band off her knuckle. The ring that had represented her triumph, the trophy she had waved in front of my face with such cruel delight just two weeks ago, was dropped unceremoniously into a brown evidence envelope and sealed with red tamper-evident tape.

""The leased townhouse in the historic district has also been placed under federal lock,"" the investigator added. ""You will be permitted seventy-two hours to retrieve your personal clothing and items that were owned prior to your relationship with Mr. Sterling. Good evening.""

Savannah collapsed back onto the terrace bench, burying her face in her hands, her shoulders heaving with uncontrollable, humiliated weeping.

I walked over to where she sat and looked down at her. ""I'm going to tell you something you need to hear, Savannah. My attorney will ensure that a monthly stipend for your unborn child is set aside from Grant’s personal estate liquidation, deposited into a restricted educational trust that neither you nor your mother can touch. Your baby will have medical care, a good school, and a clean start.""

Savannah slowly raised her tear-stained face, staring at me in total bewilderment. ""Why? After everything I did to you... why would you do that?""

May you like

""Because unlike you and Grant,"" I said quietly, ""I don't punish the innocent to gratify my own pride.""

I turned my back on the ruined bride and walked away, leaving the wreckage of Grant Sterling’s vanity forever behind me.
