Chapter 7 - The Arrest at Grandview Manor

The string quartet began their joyous recessional piece, but before the newly minted Mr. and Mrs. Sterling could take three steps down the white aisle runner, the sharp, authoritative crack of car doors slamming shut echoed across the estate grounds.
From both sides of the manicured lawn, eight federal agents wearing navy windbreakers emblazoned with the yellow letters ""FBI"" and ""IRS-CID"" strode purposefully onto the grass. Flanking them were four uniformed county sheriff deputies, their hands resting firmly near their utility belts.
The music abruptly died as the violinists stopped playing, their bows hovering awkwardly in mid-air. An uncomfortable, suffocating silence dropped over the two hundred high-society guests.
Savannah stopped dead in her tracks, her triumphant smile curdling into confusion. ""What is the meaning of this?"" she demanded, clutching her bouquet tightly against her lace gown. ""This is a private wedding! Who authorized you to be on this property?""
The lead agent, a tall, stern woman with short gray hair, pulled a gold federal badge and a tri-fold warrant from her breast pocket, ignoring Savannah entirely and walking straight up the altar steps toward Grant.
""Grant Sterling?"" Special Agent Miller announced, her voice carrying cleanly across the terrified, silent crowd. ""I am Special Agent Miller with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. I have a federal warrant for your arrest issued by the United States District Court for the Southern District.""
Grant stepped backward, his heel catching on the hem of Savannah’s cathedral train, nearly sending them both tumbling onto the stone terrace. ""This... this is an administrative misunderstanding,"" Grant stammered, his voice rising into a high-pitched, pathetic whine. ""My attorneys are handling this with the SEC! I have until five o'clock today to submit the amended filings!""
""It is five-fifteen, Mr. Sterling,"" Agent Miller replied cold, clinical efficiency. ""And this is not a civil securities matter. You are under arrest for seven counts of federal wire fraud, four counts of grand larceny, five counts of aggravated identity theft, and the unlawful conversion of employee benefit assets under ERISA Title Eighteen.""
A collective, horrified gasp rippled through the guests. Several prominent corporate investors immediately rose from their seats, their faces twisted in disgust and fury as they realized their fund manager was a criminal.
""No! No, you can't do this!"" Savannah screamed, stepping in front of Grant and thrusting her hands out defensively, her diamond ring glinting under the afternoon sun. ""I am five months pregnant! This is our wedding day! You are harassing a prominent businessman! Who put you up to this? Was it Claire?""
Savannah whipped around, pointing a manicured, trembling finger directly at where I sat in the back row. ""It was her, wasn't it? She paid you! She’s trying to destroy our lives because she couldn't keep her husband!""
Agent Miller didn't even look back at me. She signaled to two waiting deputies. ""Mrs. Sterling, step aside immediately, or you will be placed under arrest for interfering with federal law enforcement officers in the execution of a judicial warrant.""
""Don't call me Mrs. Sterling like I’m a criminal!"" Savannah shrieked, her voice turning completely unhinged. ""Grant, tell them! Tell them who your lawyers are! Tell them about the offshore funds!""
""Savannah, shut up!"" Grant barked, his face turning an ugly shade of mottled purple. ""Shut your mouth!""
For the first time, Savannah looked at the man she had married and saw nothing but terror, weakness, and contempt.
Two deputies stepped up, grabbed Grant’s arms, twisted them behind his back, and snapped heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists. The cold, mechanical click-clack of the ratchets sounded like gunshots in the silent garden.
""You have the right to remain silent,"" Agent Miller recited, turning Grant around and marching him down the white carpet. ""Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law...""
As Grant was escorted past the rows of horrified guests, his eyes met mine one final time. I didn't smile. I didn't gloat. I simply looked at him with the quiet, devastating pity one reserves for a stray dog that had repeatedly bitten the hand that fed it.

""Claire!"" he sobbed, all dignity abandoning him as the deputies pushed him toward the waiting black SUV. ""Claire, please! Call your father’s trustees! Tell them I’ll sign everything over! Don't let them take me, Claire! Please!""
The heavy steel door of the police vehicle slammed shut, cutting off his frantic cries. The siren gave a single, low yelp before the convoy sped down the gravel driveway, leaving behind a ruined wedding, two hundred stunned socialites, and a pregnant bride standing alone on a carpet of trampled white rose petals.
