Chapter 2 - The Paperwork of Ruin

Nathan grabbed the stack of transfer documents from his leather folder, his fingers ripping the cheap parchment in his desperation. "You’re lying! Claire is a former high school literature teacher! She doesn't own Whitmore Development! My father passed the founding rights down to me in his will!"

"Your father," I said, my voice measured and calm, "ran a bankrupt concrete supplier in Queens. When you came to me twelve years ago crying because loan sharks were threatening to seize your family’s garage, my family’s estate trust absorbed his three-million-dollar tax liability. We reorganized your father's shell corporation into Whitmore Development. I allowed your name to appear on the marquee because I loved you, Nathan. I wanted you to feel proud. I thought giving you dignity would make you a real partner."

"That's garbage!" Patricia shrieked, finally recovering her nerve from behind her cracked phone. She shoved her camera right into my face, spraying spit as she yelled. "Don't listen to this barren bitch! Nathan built this empire with his bare hands while she sat around drinking herbal tea! Everyone watching right now knows how she bled my poor baby dry! She's a gold digger!"

Julian snapped his fingers twice. One of his security guards, a six-foot-four ex-marine named Marcus, stepped forward and clamped a massive, gloved hand over Patricia’s phone, twisting it gently downward.

"Ma'am," Julian said, his eyes narrowing into cold slits, "you are currently broadcasting on a public platform that your son is the sole owner of a company under emergency federal tax observation. Since you have thirty-two thousand people watching your stream, perhaps you would like to explain to the IRS why six million dollars from the firm’s public infrastructure payroll were diverted last month to an offshore holding account registered under the name 'Vanessa Morales LLC'?"

Vanessa froze. Her hand dropped from her belly as if she had been struck by an electric wire. "Nathan... what is he saying? You told me that money was our private trust fund!"

"Shut up, Vanessa!" Nathan roared, his eyes darting frantically between Julian and me. The veil of confidence had completely melted, replaced by raw, unvarnished panic. "Claire, stop this nonsense right now! Call off your circus! We're married! Everything we have is marital property! You can't just seize the company without a contested divorce trial!"

"Actually, Mr. Whitmore, she can," an immaculate woman in a charcoal pencil skirt stepped out from the second Escalade. It was Evelyn Cross, the most ruthless commercial contract attorney in Manhattan. She carried a sleek black briefcase and a pair of gold-rimmed reading glasses. "Under Section Twelve of the Vance Trust Charter—which you signed without reading during your wedding rehearsal in 2015—any act of proven corporate embezzlement or moral turpitude triggers an immediate dissolution clause. You agreed to forfeit all stock options, executive salaries, and vested equity in exchange for the trust clearing your student loans and mortgage."

Evelyn clicked open her briefcase and pulled out a single sheet of embossed paper with an official gold seal. "The board of directors held an emergency session at 8:00 AM this morning. Nathan, by unanimous vote, you have been stripped of your title as Chief Executive Officer. You are no longer authorized to enter company headquarters. Your company accounts are frozen. Your corporate cards have been cancelled. And this house? This house was purchased by Claire’s great-grandfather in 1948. It was never marital property. You were merely an authorized guest."

Nathan collapsed against the hood of his sports car, breathing in ragged gasps. The cold reality was finally sinking through his thick skull.
