Chapter 8 - The Public Execution

The silence in the grand ballroom was so heavy you could hear the crystal pendants vibrating on the chandeliers above.

Evan took two unsteady steps toward me, his hands held out in a placating gesture, his eyes wild with frantic calculation. ""Megan, darling, please. You’re having a postpartum breakdown. You shouldn't be out of the hospital. Let me take you home—""

""Don't take another step, Mr. Cole,"" Marcus Vance said, stepping forward with the authority of an executioner. ""If you touch my client, these deputies will place you in handcuffs immediately for violating the emergency temporary protection order issued by Judge Harrison two hours ago.""

""Protection order?!"" Evelyn Cole shrieked from the third row, shoving her way past a group of stunned developers. ""What is the meaning of this theater, Megan?! How dare you make a scene at my son’s pinnacle career moment! Have you completely lost your mind?!""

""No, Evelyn,"" I said, turning to face my mother-in-law with an icy smile. ""I finally found it.""

I turned back to the stage and looked up at Arthur Pendelton, who nodded curtly to the technician at the audio-visual booth.

The massive presentation screen behind the podium flickered to life. Instead of the polished promotional video for Sterling & Cross’s anniversary, a high-resolution surveillance video appeared on the forty-foot display.

It was the exterior of the delivery room door at Pine Ridge Medical Center.

The entire ballroom watched in stunned horror as the video played: the red emergency light flashing above the door, medical staff rushing in with blood bags, and Evan standing outside with Vanessa Hart. The audio, enhanced by Lin’s forensic team, boomed through the ballroom’s surround-sound speakers with horrifying clarity.

“The policy has double indemnity. Six million, Evan. We’re finally free of her.”

And then, in vivid, agonizing detail, Vanessa covered her mouth and laughed.

Glares of pure disgust rippled through the crowd. Women turned away in horror; prominent corporate clients stepped back from Evan as if he were carrying the plague.

Vanessa’s knees gave out. She grabbed the edge of a banquet table to keep from collapsing, her face drained of all color, the emerald gown suddenly looking like a clown suit.

""That's illegal!"" Vanessa screamed, her voice shrill and desperate. ""That’s private surveillance! You can't show that!""

""Actually, Miss Hart, under North Carolina General Statutes regarding felony fraud investigations, evidence gathered during the commission of grand larceny and wire fraud is fully admissible for public presentation during corporate disclosures,"" Marcus stated coldly.

Arthur Pendelton stepped back up to the microphone, his voice dripping with venom. ""Effective at five o'clock this evening, Evan Cole and Vanessa Hart have been formally terminated from Sterling & Cross for gross misconduct, corporate embezzlement, and breach of fiduciary duty. A formal criminal complaint has been filed with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.""

""No, Arthur, listen to me!"" Evan panicked, lunging toward the stage. ""It was an operational error! She handled the invoices! I didn't know—""

""Shut your mouth, Evan,"" I said, cutting him off with a voice so sharp it stopped him dead in his tracks.

I took two steps forward, looking him straight in his bloodshot eyes. ""You thought I was weak. You thought because I cried over cereal, because I mourned our lost babies, because I loved you, that I would be an easy victim. You took my father's money. You leased an apartment with her while I was throwing up from morning sickness. You stood outside my room and waited for my heart to stop so you could collect six million dollars.""

""Meggie, I swear to God, I didn't mean it—she manipulated me—"" Evan stammered, pointing a shaking finger at Vanessa.

""You pathetic coward!"" Vanessa shrieked, lunging toward him with her nails bared. ""You told me you hated her! You told me she was an anchor around your neck! You planned the whole thing! You set up the offshore account!""

""Quiet, both of you,"" the senior sheriff’s deputy ordered, stepping between them with a pair of steel handcuffs.

""Evan Cole,"" the deputy announced, his voice echoing through the silent room. ""You are under arrest for corporate embezzlement, conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, and violation of North Carolina financial elder and dependent abuse statutes.""

The cold click of the steel cuffs locking around Evan’s wrists sounded like a gunshot in the cavernous room.

""Megan! Megan, tell them to stop!"" Evan wept, thrashing against the deputy’s grip, his tuxedo jacket riding up over his shoulders. ""I’m the father of your children! You can't do this to Caleb and Maya's father!""

""Caleb and Maya don't have a father,"" I said, my voice steady, clear, and utterly devoid of pity. ""They have an inmate.""
