Chapter 6 - The Paper Trail Tightens

By Thursday afternoon, I was installed in a private recovery suite at my sister Claire’s home in North Raleigh. Dr. Whitman had reluctantly approved my early discharge under the strict condition that I have round-the-clock home nursing care and daily visits to the NICU.

Evan had protested my decision to stay with Claire, calling me three times with frantic pleas about how our townhouse was fully prepared for my recovery. But his concern was hollow; Detective Lin’s surveillance team confirmed that Evan hadn't slept at our townhouse in three days. He was staying at the downtown high-rise apartment with Vanessa, popping expensive champagne, and meeting with graphic designers to finalize the corporate logo for Hart & Cole Enterprises.

Sitting around Claire’s dining room table were Marcus Vance, Detective Lin, and Arthur Pendelton, the senior founding partner of Sterling & Cross. Arthur had been my late father’s golf partner for thirty years; he was a man of ironclad ethics who treated his firm’s reputation as sacred ground.

When Arthur saw the financial dossier Marcus placed in front of him, the color drained from the elderly architect’s weathered face.

""He did this?"" Arthur whispered, his hands trembling as he flipped through the altered billings and offshore account transfers. ""Evan did this to my firm? To our clients?""

""For fourteen months, Arthur,"" Marcus said steadily. ""Evan has been redirecting corporate retainers from your municipal library project into this shell company. He used your firm's line of credit to secure a commercial lease on Glenwood Avenue under the guise of an auxiliary design studio. Vanessa Hart processed the internal purchase orders.""

Arthur closed his eyes, taking a deep, shuddering breath. ""I mentored that boy. When he married Megan, I considered him family. I was preparing to name him a named managing partner at the annual shareholder gala tomorrow evening.""

""He was counting on that,"" Detective Lin said. ""He planned to announce his departure from Sterling & Cross at that very gala, poaching three of your premier commercial clients—the Apex Medical Plaza development and the Midtown Tower contract—by claiming your firm was facing internal liquidity issues.""

""That son of a bitch,"" Arthur muttered, his voice hardening into granite. ""He’s trying to destroy my life's work on his way out the door.""

""Only if you let him,"" I spoke up, leaning forward from my armchair.

Arthur looked at me, his eyes full of sorrow and guilt. ""Megan, my dear child. I am so terribly sorry. If I had paid closer attention to the internal audits—""

""This is not your fault, Arthur,"" I interrupted gently. ""Evan is a sociopath. He spent three years making me believe I was losing my mind while he orchestrated my financial ruin. But tomorrow night is your firm’s fortieth-anniversary gala at the Carolina Country Club. Every prominent developer, city official, and commercial banker in the Triangle will be in that ballroom.""

Arthur’s eyes narrowed as he understood where I was heading. ""He expects me to introduce him on stage. He thinks tomorrow night is his coronation.""

""Let him believe it until the very last second,"" I said, my voice steady and unwavering. ""Let him stand on that stage in his tailored tuxedo with his mistress sitting at the front table. Let him believe he has conquered the world.""

May you like

""And then?"" Arthur asked.

""And then,"" Marcus smiled, tapping a thick legal brief tied with red ribbon, ""we introduce the new managing partner of his life.""
