Chapter 6 - The Sunday Morning Reckoning

By Sunday morning, the storm had cleared, leaving the air above Lake Torch crisp, cold, and carrying the sharp scent of fallen pine.
Down at the dock, Ben and Lily were packing their bags into Lily’s Subaru, their movements silent, coordinated, and resolute.
Inside the great room, Daniel paced like a caged wolf, his smartphone glued to his ear as he waited through sixteen rings.
"Claire, answer the damn phone," he growled into the empty room, his knuckles turning white around the device.
The phone clicked on the other end, but it was not my voice that answered.
"Good morning, Daniel," said an elderly, cultured voice that made Daniel stop dead in his tracks.
It was Arthur Sterling, my father’s oldest legal advisor and the senior trustee of the Vance Heritage Trust.
"Arthur?" Daniel stammered, his posture immediately slumping into nervous deference.
"Why do you have Claire’s phone? Where is my wife?"
"Claire is currently having breakfast on the veranda of the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Daniel," Arthur Sterling replied calmly.
"Surrounded by twelve members of the Michigan Land Conservancy Board, who have just concluded their annual summer review."
Daniel’s knees felt suddenly hollow; he reached out to steady himself against the walnut dining table.
"What is she doing with the conservancy board? This is our private family weekend!"
"Section 14 of your late father-in-law’s estate charter was amended two years ago, Daniel," Arthur explained, his tone smooth, clinical, and devoid of pity.
"Upon the presentation of evidence indicating fraudulent dissipation or intentional manipulation by a co-beneficiary, the primary beneficiary may voluntarily surrender secondary marital rights to an emergency conservancy panel."
"What evidence?" Daniel choked out, his voice cracking into a ragged whisper.
"The surveillance logs your private investigators compiled over the last six months, Daniel," Arthur answered with a faint, dry chuckle.
"You see, the investigative firm you hired in Chicago was founded by Arthur Vance’s former business partner forty years ago."
"Every bill you paid, every dossier you requested, and every GPS log you ordered on Claire’s vehicle was carbon-copied directly to my desk."
Daniel dropped his glass of water, the crystal shattering across the hardwood floor, splashing cold liquid over his bare feet.
"Claire knew," Daniel breathed, the room spinning around him.
"Claire knew before I even met Rachel."
"Claire has known since the day you opened that secondary shell company in Delaware, Daniel," Arthur said, his voice turning into pure, unyielding steel.
"She didn't come to the lake this weekend because she had no interest in participating in your theater. She stayed away so you would fulfill the final condition of the trust covenant."
"What condition?" Daniel whispered, his breath coming in shallow, terrified gasps.

"Willful introduction of a non-marital third party into the principal family estate during a designated family period," Arthur read from the parchment.
"By bringing Miss Rachel Mercer into that bedroom, Daniel, you formally forfeited all secondary rights to Arthur Vance’s estate forever."
