Chapter 5 - The Mask Shatters

Daniel stepped into the closet, his face instantly hardening into an expression Rachel had never seen before.
The charming, wealthy executive who had bought her diamond bracelets in Chicago was gone; in his place stood a cold, desperate gambler with his back against the wall.
He snatched the folder from her hands with a violent flick of his wrist, tossing it back into the steel safe and slamming the lid shut.
"You have no business going through my private papers, Rachel," he said, his voice dropping into a menacing whisper.
"I have every business when you use me as a pawn in your corporate execution!" Rachel hissed back, scrambling to her feet and backing out of the closet.
"You told me you were leaving her because she was emotionally distant! You told me you wanted to start a new life with me in the city!"
Daniel let out a low, humorless laugh that sent a shudder through her spine.
"Do you know how much debt Mercer Engineering is carrying right now, Rachel?" he asked, stepping out into the bedroom and towering over her.
"Twelve million dollars on the Grand Rapids bridge project alone. If that timber trust doesn't clear by November, the creditors will liquidate my firm, my cars, and that high-rise apartment you love so much."
"So you brought me here to be a target?" Rachel cried, tears of pure humiliation stinging her eyes.
"You wanted her to walk in on us! You wanted her to call her lawyers from this very room!"
"She was supposed to be here!" Daniel yelled, losing all control, his fists clenching at his sides.
"She was supposed to see your bag in that closet! She was supposed to lose her mind, throw a scene, and file the paperwork on Monday morning!"
"Instead, she stayed in Worthington," Rachel said, her voice shaking with bitter realization.
"She knew, Daniel. Somehow, she knew exactly what you were doing."
Daniel froze, his breath hitching in his chest.
"What did you say?"
"Think about it!" Rachel argued, pointing toward the window.
"She didn't scream, she didn't call the kids to cancel their trip, and she didn't drive up here with a private detective. She let you bring me here, let you unpack my clothes, and left you sitting alone in the middle of your own circus."
"She didn't know," Daniel muttered frantically, running both hands through his graying hair.
"Lily told her on Wednesday. Ben said she took it completely calmly. Claire doesn't understand legal covenants—she's an artist, for God's sake!"

"Then why are you the one sweating in the dark, Daniel?" Rachel asked, her voice cutting through his panic like a scalpel.
"While your wife is sitting ninety miles away, drinking tea, and letting you hang yourself with your own rope?"
