Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Wardrobe

At midnight, a heavy summer storm rolled over northern Michigan, bringing sheets of cold rain that hammered against the cedar shingles.

Inside the master suite, the darkness was thick and oppressive, broken only by the blue flashes of distant lightning across the lake.

Rachel lay on the right side of the king-size bed, staring up at the vaulted pine beams, unable to sleep.

Beside her, Daniel tossed and turned violently, his breathing shallow, muttering fragmented words into his pillow like a man running from a phantom.

Every object in the bedroom spoke of Claire with quiet, terrifying permanence.

On the dresser sat a small porcelain dish containing sea glass Claire had collected with her daughter when Lily was seven years old.

On the nightstand rested a leather-bound journal with Claire’s handwriting noting the dates the loons returned to the cove each spring.

Even the scent of the room—dried lavender, beeswax, and sweet rain—was an invisible presence that Rachel could not wash away with her expensive perfume.

Rachel slipped out from under the heavy down duvet and walked barefoot toward the walk-in closet to find an extra blanket.

She pulled the brass latch open, and the cedar-scented interior light flickered on automatically.

Hanging neatly along the northern wall were Daniel’s flannel shirts, fishing vests, and waterproof windbreakers.

On the southern wall hung Claire’s clothes: her vintage wool sweaters, her gardening overalls, and a soft blue cashmere wrap that smelled faintly of vanilla.

Rachel reached past the coats toward the upper shelf, searching for a quilt.

Her fingers brushed against a heavy, steel lockbox tucked behind a row of winter boots.

It was an old fireproof safe, its surface scratched and dusty, but the electronic keypad’s green LED light was glowing steadily.

Curiosity winning over propriety, Rachel examined the lock.

On the side of the metal casing, written on a piece of faded masking tape in Daniel’s hurried scrawl, were four digits: 0624.

It was Daniel and Claire’s wedding anniversary—June twenty-fourth.

Rachel punched the code into the keypad.

The electronic latch clicked open with a sharp, heavy snap that echoed in the quiet room.

Rachel lifted the steel lid, expecting to find property deeds, bearer bonds, or perhaps family jewelry.

Instead, her breath caught in her throat as she looked down at three thick, manila folders labeled with the name of a private investigative firm in Chicago.

And on top of the folders lay a legal document bearing a bold, red header: Irrevocable Spousal Power of Attorney and Asset Liquidation Protocol.
