Chapter 6 - Red Hands In The Master Closet

The drive from the hospital to our suburban home took twenty-five minutes. Through a secure audio patch Walsh had provided to a tablet in my hospital room, I was able to listen to the police dispatch channel in real time.
""Target vehicle, black Audi sedan, turning onto Sycamore Crest Lane,"" an undercover officer’s voice crackled through the speaker. ""Two occupants confirmed. Male driver, female passenger. Proceeding into the private driveway.""
I stared at the tablet screen, my knuckles white against the bed sheets. In my mind's eye, I could see our house—the wide front porch, the white hydrangeas I had planted last spring, the two-car garage where Liam Torres had crawled beneath my Honda with a pair of metal cutters.
""Units hold perimeter,"" the dispatch commander ordered. ""Wait for visual confirmation of asset recovery.""
Inside our house, Eric and Jenna were completely unaware that four pinhole cameras had been installed inside the master bedroom two hours prior, authorized under an emergency surveillance warrant.
The tablet screen switched to a live video feed.
The master bedroom door swung open. Eric rushed inside, discarding his jacket onto the bed. Jenna followed right behind him, kicking the door shut with her heel. The moment the latch clicked, she threw her arms around Eric’s neck, pulling him into a passionate, breathless kiss.
""Did you get the PIN?"" Jenna asked eagerly, breaking away to look at him.
""0-8-1-4,"" Eric laughed, a cold, mocking sound that made my skin crawl. ""The idiot used our anniversary. She actually looked at me with tears in her eyes and thanked me for carrying the burden.""
""God, she’s so pathetic,"" Jenna giggled, running her fingers through his hair. ""I thought I was going to throw up sitting next to her bed listening to her whine about her legs. When does the life insurance check clear?""
""The adjuster said within ten business days of the final police report,"" Eric said, walking toward the walk-in closet and sliding the full-length mirror aside to reveal the heavy steel safe. ""Walsh thinks it’s an open-and-shut case of brake failure. Once the two million hits the account, we sell the house, close my firm, and we're on a flight to Costa Rica before the probate court even opens.""
""And what about Buster?"" Jenna asked, glancing at our golden retriever sleeping on the rug.
""Drop him at a shelter on the way out of town,"" Eric said dismissively, kneeling before the digital keypad. ""He's just an extra expense.""
I watched through the screen, my heart beating with steady, icy clarity. There was no pain left in me now. No grief. Only the absolute satisfaction of watching two monsters walk straight into the iron jaws of a bear trap.
Eric entered the code: 0-8-1-4.
The safe beeped twice. The heavy electronic lock disengaged with a dull clunk.
Eric pulled the thick steel door open. Inside sat stack upon stack of hundred-dollar bills—marked currency provided by the Ohio State Highway Patrol Financial Crimes Division, placed there specifically to establish the chain of custody for interstate conspiracy.
""Look at this,"" Eric breathed, grabbing two thick bundles of cash and holding them up in the air like trophies. ""Over sixty grand in emergency reserves. Torres wanted ten to keep his mouth shut, but honestly? We don't even need to pay him. We take this right now, pack our bags, and leave tonight.""

Jenna squealed with delight, jumping into his arms. ""Let's do it, Eric. Let's leave right now!""
""Execute,"" Walsh’s voice barked through the tactical channel. ""Breach, breach, breach!""
