Chapter 1 - The Paper Trail That Froze My Blood

The heart monitor screamed in erratic, shrill bursts. A nurse rushed into the room, checking my IV lines, but Detective Walsh gently signaled her that this was not a cardiac arrest. It was pure, distilled shock. My vision blurred as I stared at the bank slip resting on my sterile hospital tray.
Eric Miller. The name was printed clearly across the payer line. The transfer had been authorized at midnight, forty-eight hours before my Honda smashed into that concrete barrier. Eight thousand dollars from our joint savings account, labeled under an innocuous memo: ""Home Renovation Consulting.""
""Maya, take a breath,"" Detective Walsh said, his voice dropping into a low, measured register. ""I know this is overwhelming. But Liam Torres was arrested two hours ago trying to board a bus out of town. He cracked immediately. He stated a man matching Eric’s description handed him half the cash in advance in a parking lot on Montgomery Road, then wired the remaining balance right after he confirmed the brake lines were cut.""
""No,"" I whispered, my voice sounding like gravel. My chest burned beneath the surgical bindings. ""Eric was sleeping next to me that night. He held me when I had nightmares. He was here every single morning holding my hand while they drained the fluid from my lungs.""
""Perpetrators often stay close to their victims to monitor the fallout and gauge police suspicion,"" Walsh replied evenly. ""We also pulled your household insurance records this morning, Maya. Did you know a supplemental term life policy was taken out under your name six months ago? Two million dollars, with a double indemnity clause in the event of an accidental motor vehicle death.""
My stomach lurched violently. Two million dollars. Eric’s architectural firm had been struggling for over a year, but whenever I asked about our finances, he had always flashed his easy, charming smile and told me not to worry my pretty head about the numbers. He was handling it, he said. We were fine, he said.
""I need you to listen very carefully,"" Walsh said, leaning closer so his words barely carried across the room. ""Eric doesn't know Torres is in custody yet. He doesn't know we have this bank receipt. We want to monitor his movements and see if he has an accomplice, or if he's attempting to liquidate assets before making a run for it. For your safety, you cannot let him see that you know. Can you act like everything is normal when he walks through that door?""
I looked down at my mangled legs encased in cold metal rods, then at my trembling hands. The man who had vowed to cherish me in sickness and in health had paid eight thousand dollars to snap my spine against an Interstate highway divider.
""I can,"" I whispered, a sudden, frigid calm settling over my panic. ""I will.""
Twenty minutes later, the door handle clicked. Eric stepped inside carrying a fresh bouquet of yellow tulips and a cardboard cup of warm herbal tea. His hair was slightly damp from his shower, his jaw freshly shaven. He looked like the picture of an exhausted, devoted husband.
""Hey, sweetheart,"" he murmured, his face softening into practiced concern. He set the flowers down, leaned over the metal bed rail, and kissed my forehead. His skin felt like ice against mine. ""The doctor in the hallway said your vitals spiked earlier. Are you hurting? Do you need more pain meds?""
I forced my mouth into a weak, fragile smile, looking directly into the hazel eyes of the man who had ordered my execution. ""Just a bad cramp in my ribs, babe. I’m okay now. You look tired... did you sleep at all at home?""
May you like
""A little,"" he sighed, sitting heavily in the vinyl armchair and taking my limp fingers into his hands. ""The house feels so empty without you, Maya. Every time I walk past the garage, I just keep seeing the ambulance. I don't know what I would do if I lost you.""
I squeezed his hand back, feeling the hard band of his gold wedding ring pressing into my knuckles. ""I'm not going anywhere, Eric. I'm going to make sure everything gets sorted out.""
