Chapter 4 - The Truth in the Ivory Envelope

Back in the presidential recovery suite at Swedish Medical, the room was quiet save for the rhythmic, peaceful breathing of my newborn son, whom I had named Leo. Warren sat in the armchair beside my bed, holding a glass of warm water for me while I leaned back against the propped-up pillows.

Spread out across the mahogany nightstand were several legal documents, DNA profile reports, and the torn ivory envelope I had knocked over in the foyer.

""Tell me everything,"" I whispered, my voice still raspy from the ordeal. ""Vance told me I was an orphan whose parents abandoned her at a fire station in Boston.""

Warren’s jaw clenched so hard the muscles in his neck stood out like cords. ""Thirty-two years ago, our estate in Massachusetts caught fire. It was arson orchestrated by corporate rivals. Your mother perished in the blaze, and our nanny fled into the night with you. She lost you in the panic. By the time the police found the nanny, she was in shock and couldn’t remember where she had left you. I spent tens of millions of dollars, tore the East Coast apart, but the trail went cold.""

He tapped the ivory envelope with his finger.

""Five weeks ago, my personal genetic surveillance firm picked up a ninety-nine point nine percent match from a routine prenatal panel you took at the university clinic. The law firm sent this certified, restricted-delivery packet directly to your residence to inform you of the paternity confirmation and to transfer your thirty-percent rightful trust in Sterling Global Holdings—an inheritance worth roughly four point two billion dollars.""

My breath caught in my chest. Four point two billion dollars.

""Vance signed for this delivery,"" Warren continued, his voice dropping an octave into chilling calm. ""He opened it. He realized that the quiet, self-sacrificing woman he had been belittling, controlling, and emotionally abusing was the sole heir to the entire Sterling empire. But he didn't want you to have the power, Natalie. He consulted an offshore attorney to draft legal conservatorship documents, intending to have you declared mentally unfit post-childbirth so he could assume full legal control of your trust.""

Tears of pure, icy clarity spilled down my cheeks. The pieces clicked together with horrifying precision. Vance’s sudden insistence that I stop working. His subtle gaslighting about my memory. His cold, calculated detachment as I lay bleeding on the floor tonight. He hadn't just neglected me; he had deliberately delayed medical help hoping that I would slip away on that hardwood floor, leaving him as the grieving widower and legal guardian of my unborn child and my billions.

""He tried to kill us,"" I whispered, looking down at little Leo.

""He tried,"" Warren said, standing up and towering over the room like an avenging angel. ""And for that, he will lose every single thing he has ever touched.""
