Chapter 1 - The Blood on the Floor and the Sirens in the Rain

The cold hardwood floor offered no comfort as the searing contractions tore through my abdomen. Thirty-nine weeks pregnant, drenched in a mixture of amniotic fluid and dark, terrifying crimson, I clutched the ivory envelope against my chest. My fingers trembled violently against the embossed gold lettering of Vance & Sterling Legal Partners. Just moments earlier, the sound of party horns and cheap laughter over the phone had cut deeper than any physical knife could. Vance, my husband of four years, had chosen his narcissistic mother’s sixty-fifth birthday banquet—and the clandestine company of his secretary, Chloe—over the life of our unborn child. ""Call a cab, Natalie. Don’t ruin my night,"" had been his parting words before the line went dead.
Now, kneeling beside me in our dim entryway, was Warren Sterling. He was a titan of American industry, a reclusive billionaire whose name commanded immediate silence and terror in every boardroom in Seattle. Yet here he was, ruined in the pouring rain, his tailored wool overcoat soaked and unbuttoned, staring down at my face with eyes that mirrored my own slate-gray gaze.
""Stay with me, darling,"" Warren murmured, his baritone voice cracking with raw, unvarnished terror. ""Look at me, Natalie. Keep your eyes on mine."" He tore off his dry cashmere scarf, pressing it desperately against my trembling hands to keep me warm. ""The medical team is thirty seconds behind me. I brought my private trauma unit. You are not dying tonight, do you hear me? Neither of you.""
""Who... why are you here?"" I managed to gasp, the agonizing spasms taking the air right out of my lungs. ""My husband... Vance works for you...""
""Vance Mercer is a dead man walking,"" Warren snarled under his breath, his jaw tightening into iron before softening immediately as he turned back to me. ""I don’t care about him. I care about you. For thirty-two years, I thought the fire in Boston took my wife and my baby girl. I thought the earth had swallowed everything I ever loved. But three hours ago, my private investigators confirmed what that envelope in your hands proved five weeks ago. You are my flesh and blood, Natalie. You are Natalie Sterling.""

Before my shock could register, the front door burst open wider. Four paramedics in navy gear flooded the entryway with high-grade emergency stretchers, oxygen tanks, and surgical kits. Warren never left my side. He held my bloodstained fingers in his large, calloused palm, barking concise, authoritative orders to the medical staff like a general defending his last stronghold.
As they lifted me onto the gurney, the brutal pain dragged me down into darkness. The last thing I saw before the flashing red emergency lights engulfed my vision was Warren Sterling picking up that ivory envelope from the floor, his eyes narrowing into cold, lethal fury as he read the torn seal. ""He hid this from you,"" Warren whispered, his voice vibrating with absolute retribution. ""He tried to erase you. But I am going to tear his entire world apart piece by piece.""
