Chapter 6 - The Broken Promise

Friday, November 28th.

A heavy, wet snow began to fall over Coeur d'Alene, dusting the pine needles and coating the asphalt of the commercial strip where Lyle Foster’s law office was located.

Inside the third-floor conference room, the heat was cranked up high. The room was dominated by a polished mahogany table surrounded by black leather executive chairs. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a view of the distant lake, obscured by the gray veil of the winter storm.

Lyle Foster sat at the head of the table. He was a broad-shouldered man in his late fifties with slicked-back silver hair, wearing an expensive wool suit that couldn't quite conceal his expanding waistline. Across from him sat Marlene, dressed in an immaculate cashmere coat, radiant with triumphant smugness.

Ethan sat beside Paige. He wore his best suit, but his collar looked too tight, and his knuckles were white as he tapped his fingers erratically on the armrest. Paige sat stone-still, her hands clutched tightly in her lap, her eyes fixed on the tabletop.

My father sat in the corner, staring down at his coffee cup, looking like a man awaiting a firing squad.

The door opened, and I walked in, followed closely by Marcus Vance.

Marcus carried a sleek black leather briefcase. He didn't smile; he didn't offer handshakes. He pulled out two chairs on our side of the table and held one for me before taking his seat.

""Nora, darling!"" Marlene chimed, her voice dripping with artificial warmth. ""We’re so glad you made it despite the weather. Lyle has all the transfer deeds prepared. It will only take five minutes, and then we can all put this painful chapter behind us.""

""Let’s get right to business,"" Lyle said, booming with hearty professional confidence as he slid a thick blue-backed legal document toward me. ""This is the general warranty deed transferring the parcel known as Tax Lot 42, Lake Coeur d'Alene, from Nora Bennett to Ethan Cole and Paige Foster, as joint tenants with right of survivorship. Once Nora signs, my notary will stamp it, and we’ll file it with Kootenai County recorder’s office before the holiday cutoff.""

I looked down at the document. The pen was resting beside the signature line.

""Where is the developer’s contract, Lyle?"" I asked quietly.

The room froze.

Lyle’s hearty smile flickered. ""I’m sorry? What developer contract?""

""The option agreement between North Idaho Timber Holdings LLC and the Silverwood Marina Syndicate,"" I said, leaning back and lacing my fingers together. ""The one with the two-hundred-and-fifty-thousand-dollar liquidated damages clause that triggers if you don't provide clean, unencumbered shoreline access by five o'clock today.""

Marlene’s face lost every drop of color. She snapped her head toward Lyle, whose eyes darted wildly toward Marcus Vance.

""I... I don't know what you’re talking about, Nora,"" Ethan interjected, sweating profusely through his shirt collar. ""We’re keeping the cabin! We talked about this! It’s for the baby!""

""Shut up, Ethan,"" I said, not even looking at him.

Marcus opened his briefcase and laid out four pristine stacks of documents.

""Exhibit A,"" Marcus announced, sliding the first stack forward. ""A certified copy of Susan Bennett’s 2006 testamentary trust, which explicitly revokes all life-estate privileges from Robert Bennett upon default of county property taxes. Tax arrears totaling eighteen thousand dollars were verified this morning.""

My father groaned, dropping his head into his hands. ""Nora, please...""

""Exhibit B,"" Marcus continued ruthlessly. ""The forensic audit of Foster Consulting LLC, demonstrating that the property taxes were deliberately withheld so Lyle Foster could attempt a fraudulent judicial foreclosure to bypass Nora Bennett’s title.""

Lyle stood up, knocking his chair back. ""This is outrageous! You have no legal standing to make these accusations in my private office! Sign the deed, Nora, or we will take you to probate court and tie up that lake house until you’re bankrupt!""

""I won't be going to probate court, Lyle,"" I said, looking him dead in the eye. ""Because Exhibit C is currently sitting on the desk of the Kootenai County Prosecuting Attorney.""
