Chapter 7 - The Auction of Broken Pride

Three weeks after the lockout, the final judicial liquidation hearing for Daniel Carter's personal assets took place in courtroom 4B of the municipal justice center.

The courtroom was quiet, smelling of floor wax and old legal volumes.

Daniel sat at the defense table beside a court-appointed public defender, having been unable to afford the retainer for his private attorney.

His suit was noticeably baggy, his collar frayed, and his arrogance completely extinguished.

Richard and Margaret sat two rows behind him in the gallery, looking like two shriveled ghosts. The country club had quietly revoked their family membership after the commercial liens against Carter Logistics were published in the legal gazette.

Judge Harrison adjusted his reading glasses, reviewing the joint receivership settlement.

"Mr. Carter," Judge Harrison spoke, his deep voice commanding absolute attention. "The forensic accounting report confirms that between 2023 and 2025, you systematically commingled personal expenses, diverted company receivables, and executed fraudulent transfers totaling four hundred and twelve thousand dollars."

Daniel looked down at his cuffed hands, resting them flat on the table. "Yes, Your Honor."

"Furthermore," the judge continued, "the cross-collateralization agreement held by Sterling Holdings LLC is valid, perfected, and fully enforceable under state commercial equity statutes."

Judge Harrison picked up his gavel.

"The court hereby orders the complete divestment of all equity held by Daniel Carter in the entity formerly known as Carter Logistics. All operational control, physical assets, trade accounts, and registered properties—including the residential parcel at 742 Elmwood Terrace—are awarded solely to Sterling Holdings LLC to satisfy the outstanding judgment."

Daniel closed his eyes, a single shudder passing through his shoulders as the wooden gavel came down with a sharp, resounding crack.

"Court is adjourned," Judge Harrison declared.

As the spectators rose, Daniel slowly stood up and turned around to look at me.

I stood three rows back, wearing a navy blue wool coat, holding my leather portfolio under my arm.

"Emily," Daniel croaked out, his voice cracked with exhaustion and absolute defeat. "Can I at least have my grandfather's fishing rods from the garage?"

I looked at the man who had looked at me with open disgust three weeks ago, who had planned to throw me onto the street with nothing while his mistress took my bedroom.

"The inventory will be cataloged by the trustee, Daniel," I said softly, my voice completely devoid of hatred. "Whatever is purely sentimental will be shipped to your parents' apartment. The rest belongs to the creditor."

I turned on my heel and walked out through the swinging mahogany doors into the bright winter afternoon.
