Chapter 5 - The Corporate Lockout

At 7:45 AM the following morning, the glass doors of Carter Logistics headquarters in the city's commercial district were sealed with yellow security tape.
Daniel arrived in a battered yellow taxi, wearing the same wrinkled suit from the night before, his eyes bloodshot and his tie hanging loose around his collar.
He marched up the granite steps, reaching into his pocket for his electronic key fob.
He pressed the plastic sensor against the scanner beside the main glass entrance.
A high-pitched red chime sounded twice: ACCESS DENIED.
"What the hell?" Daniel spat, pounding his fist against the reinforced glass. "Hey! Open the door!"
From inside the sleek marble atrium, two private security guards in charcoal uniforms approached the door.
Behind them walked Rachel Vance, accompanied by two forensic accountants carrying aluminum hard cases.
Rachel held up an official cease-and-desist declaration against the glass.
"Mr. Carter," Rachel spoke through the exterior intercom. "Under the emergency receivership order executed yesterday, your corporate credentials have been revoked. Sterling Holdings has assumed interim operational control of Carter Logistics."
"This is my company!" Daniel shrieked, his voice echoing across the busy downtown sidewalk, turning the heads of morning commuters. "My name is on the building! Carter Logistics!"
"The trade name was pledged as part of the master commercial debenture, Mr. Carter," Rachel explained calmly. "Furthermore, the state licensing board has suspended your corporate charter pending an investigation into eighteen fraudulent vendor invoices paid to 'Miller Media Group'—a shell entity registered to Sophia Miller."
Daniel froze, his knuckles resting against the glass.
"How did you find Miller Media?" he stammered, his voice dropping an octave into pure terror.
"You used the corporate cloud drive to save the draft invoices, Daniel," I spoke, stepping out from behind the interior reception pillar.
I wore a crisp, tailored ivory pantsuit, my dark hair pulled back into an elegant knot. I held a steaming cup of dark roast coffee in one hand and a black digital tablet in the other.
Daniel stared through the glass, his mouth opening and closing like a fish pulled from water.
"Emily... please," he pleaded, pressing both palms flat against the window. "We can settle this. I’ll fire Sophia! I’ll sign over fifty percent of the voting shares to you! Just let me inside to run the morning fleet! If the nine o'clock shipments don't roll out, the Amazon contract will be canceled!"
"The nine o'clock shipments have already rolled out, Daniel," I replied through the speaker, checking my tablet. "I promoted Marcus, your head of dispatch, to interim vice president forty-five minutes ago. The drivers are on the road, the union benefits are fully guaranteed, and the Amazon rep was thrilled to hear we've eliminated three hundred thousand dollars in fraudulent executive overhead."

I took a slow, deliberate sip of my coffee, meeting his desperate gaze with absolute composure.
"Carter Logistics doesn't need you anymore, Daniel," I said. "In fact, it never did."
