Chapter 5 - The Desperate Mistress

By four o’clock that afternoon, panic had engulfed the luxurious high-rise apartment Emily Ross occupied in the Seaport district.

Two moving men hired by the building management were already wheeling designer furniture out into the service elevator.

The building concierge stood in the hallway holding a digital tablet, politely informing Emily that her lease was terminated.

“There must be a mistake!” Emily shrieked, clutching her designer coat around her pregnant belly.

“Daniel Briggs paid for this lease through the end of next year! He is the managing director of Vanguard Logistics!”

“Miss Ross, the corporate account associated with Vanguard Logistics was frozen by court injunction two hours ago,” the concierge explained calmly.

“The commercial guarantor, Harbor Crest Maritime, notified our corporate office of immediate non-payment.

You have until six o’clock to remove your personal belongings from the premises.”

Just then, the elevator doors opened, and Daniel stumbled into the hallway looking like a broken, frantic stranger.

His tie was undone, his hair disheveled, and his expensive wool blazer was stained with damp rain from the harbor street.

He was carrying a single cardboard box containing his desk photographs and personal pens.

“Daniel!” Emily cried, rushing toward him on trembling legs.

“What is going on? The building manager says the rent check bounced!

They’re clearing out the living room furniture! Where are we supposed to sleep tonight?”

Daniel slumped against the hallway wall, dropping the cardboard box onto the carpet with a dull thud.

“It’s over, Emily,” Daniel whispered hoarsely, his eyes staring blankly at the floor.

“Everything is gone. The office, the shipping permits, the bank accounts... Claire took everything.”

Emily stopped in her tracks, her mouth hanging open as the horrifying reality began to register in her mind.

“What do you mean, Claire took it?

You told me she was just an introverted artist who depended on your salary!

You told me she was living off your hard work for nine years!”

“I was wrong,” Daniel muttered, burying his face in his trembling hands.

“Her father... her father owned the entire commercial foundation beneath my business.

Every truck I leased, every warehouse bay I operated, it was all held under her private family trust.

I don't have a company anymore, Emily. I don't even have fifty dollars in my checking account.”

Emily looked down at her pregnant stomach, then back at the broken, ruined man slumped against the hallway baseboards.

The handsome, powerful executive who had promised her a waterfront townhouse and a life of effortless luxury had vanished.

In his place stood a bankrupt, humiliated fraud who couldn't even pay for a shared rideshare across town.

“You lied to me,” Emily whispered, her voice shaking with pure, venomous betrayal.

“You told me we were moving into a four-bedroom townhouse with a harbor view!

You told me your wife would just roll over and sign whatever papers you put in front of her!”

“I thought she would!” Daniel yelled desperately, looking up through bloodshot, pathetic eyes.

“She was always so quiet, Emily! She never argued about money! How was I supposed to know she was holding the deeds?”

Emily pulled off the diamond promise ring Daniel had bought her using embezzled Vanguard funds and threw it at his chest.

The jewel bounced off his lapel and rolled into the seam of the hallway carpet.

“Don't ever call me again, Daniel,” Emily sobbed, turning on her heel toward the elevator.

“I’m going to stay with my sister in New Hampshire, and my lawyer will contact you for child support the day this baby is born!”
