Chapter 4 - The Corporate Eviction

The midday sun beat down brightly upon the glass towers lining Atlantic Avenue in downtown Boston.

Inside the sleek eleventh-floor offices of Vanguard Logistics, Daniel was pacing behind his polished mahogany desk.

He was sweating through his bespoke Italian shirt, yelling into his speakerphone at his primary freight dispatcher.

“What do you mean three fuel deliveries were cancelled?” Daniel roared, slamming his fountain pen onto the leather blotter.

“We have fifteen refrigerated shipping containers leaving for New York at two o’clock! Authorize the corporate credit line!”

“Mr. Briggs, the terminal bank flagged the credit authorization,” the dispatcher replied nervously through the speaker.

“They said our master commercial guarantor revoked their underwriting bond forty minutes ago.

The fuel supplier refused to hook up the pumps without cash up front.”

Before Daniel could scream another order, the heavy glass double doors of his private office were pushed open.

Two men in dark tailored suits stepped inside, flanked by a uniformed Suffolk County deputy sheriff holding a clipboard.

Behind them walked Arthur Vance, holding a thick leather briefcase stamped with the gold crest of Sterling & Vance.

Daniel lunged to his feet, knocking his leather executive chair backward against the panoramic window.

“Arthur? What the hell is this circus?

You can’t just walk into my private headquarters during operational hours!”

The deputy sheriff stepped forward, completely ignoring Daniel’s bluster, and laid a laminated court notice on the desk.

“Daniel Briggs? I am serving you with an immediate commercial eviction order and a writ of property attachment.

Issued by the Superior Court of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.”

Daniel stared at the paper, his jaw dropping open in utter disbelief.

“Eviction? This is my corporate headquarters! I signed an eight-year lease!”

“You signed a sublease agreement with Harbor Crest Maritime LLC, Daniel,” Arthur said smoothly, stepping to the desk.

“Which was contingent upon the continued personal guarantee and good faith covenants of the Bennett family trust.

Under section nine of the master commercial charter, material fraud and unauthorized diversion of corporate funds constitute an immediate breach.”

“I never diverted funds!” Daniel shouted, his voice cracking into a high, desperate pitch.

Arthur gave a thin, lethal smile and pulled three glossy bank statements from his briefcase.

“Then perhaps you would care to explain the four hundred thousand dollars in corporate loans transferred to ‘Emily Ross Design Consulting’?”

Daniel froze, all the oxygen rushing out of his lungs in a single, agonizing gasp.

The walls of his carefully constructed financial fortress were crumbling around him in broad daylight.

He had skimmed company money to buy Emily a luxury sports car and rent an expensive apartment in the Seaport district.

He thought he was hiding the transactions inside internal consulting fees that nobody would ever audit.

“Harbor Crest has exercised its right of complete asset liquidation,” Arthur announced, looking at his gold pocket watch.

“You have thirty minutes to collect your personal items from this desk, Mr. Briggs.

The locks on the Charlestown freight yard have already been changed, and your fleet is grounded under court order.”
