Chapter 7 - The Master Plan

Three weeks passed, and the legal gears turned with ruthless efficiency. The D.C. Metropolitan Police and federal prosecutors didn't hesitate when presented with the forensic evidence recovered from Margaret’s computer.

Margaret Holloway was indicted on twelve felony counts, including grand larceny, corporate embezzlement, aggravated child endangerment, and conspiracy to commit fraud. Denied bail due to flight risk, she was currently sitting in a federal holding facility in Alexandria, awaiting trial.

Julian didn't fare any better. Marcus's team tracked him to a private airfield in Maryland where he was attempting to charter a flight to the Bahamas. Federal agents intercepted him on the tarmac. Confronted with the paper trail showing his direct coordination with Margaret, his defense crumbled instantly. Facing fifteen to twenty years, Julian was already attempting to negotiate a plea deal by throwing Margaret completely under the bus.

Inside Caldwell Manor, the transformation was nothing short of miraculous. The dark, antique furnishings that Margaret had curated to maintain an atmosphere of Victorian solemnity were cleared out. Bright rugs, soft couches, and child-safe play areas took over the ground floor. The nursery was repainted in soft sky blue and warm yellow, filled with sunlight, musical instruments, and books.

Free from the dulling effects of the barbiturates, Nico and Noah flourished at an astounding rate. Within a month, their vocabulary exploded. ""Daddy,"" ""ball,"" ""more,"" and ""dog"" joined ""Mama"" in their daily lexicon. Their laughter, once a rare, miraculous event, became the constant soundtrack of the house.

I made radical changes to my own life. I promoted my chief operating officer to executive vice president, handed over all daily operational duties, and prohibited any international travel that kept me away from the estate for more than twenty-four hours. For the first time in five years, my calendar was governed by nap times, park outings, and bedtime stories rather than quarterly earnings calls.

One Tuesday afternoon, my family attorney, David Sterling, arrived at the house with a leather briefcase full of documents. Lena and I met him in the newly renovated sunroom overlooking the gardens.

""Everything is finalized, Ethan,"" David said, spreading several documents across the glass table. ""The trust funds have been completely restructured. Julian has signed away all claims to the Caldwell family estate in exchange for a recommended five-year sentence.""

""And the medical trust?"" I asked.

David turned to Lena, sliding a thick folder toward her. ""Miss Morales, at Mr. Caldwell's direction, we have established the Morales Medical Endowment. Your mother's medical expenses have been paid in full for the next ten years. Furthermore, our legal team has secured her an emergency medical visa. Her flight arrives at Dulles International next Thursday, and she has been admitted directly to Johns Hopkins for priority transplant evaluation.""

Lena stared at the paperwork, her hands shaking so violently she dropped her pen. ""I... I can't accept this. This is millions of dollars. I'm just an employee—""

""You're not an employee anymore, Lena,"" I said, leaning forward and placing my hand gently over hers. ""You're family. And Caldwells protect their family.""
