Chapter 4 - The Poison in the Cup

Before I could print the documents, the faint sound of footsteps overhead echoed through the basement ceiling. Heavy, measured, purposeful. Someone was walking toward the kitchen directly above me.

I pulled out my phone, quickly texting my head of personal security, Marcus Vance: Bring four armed men to the main estate immediately. Do not use sirens. Enter through the service gate.

I pocketed the flash drive containing every single file from Margaret’s computer, slipped out of the office, and locked the door behind me. I climbed the stairs quietly, keeping my back to the wall as I approached the kitchen archway.

The scent of boiling peppermint filled the air. Margaret was standing at the industrial stainless-steel island, her back to me. A porcelain teapot was steaming on the counter. She reached into her apron, pulled out that same small amber dropper bottle I had seen in the surveillance footage, and tipped three generous drops into the spout.

""A soothing blend, isn't it, Margaret?"" I said, stepping into the light.

She jumped, nearly knocking the teapot onto the tile floor. The amber bottle slipped from her fingers, clattering against the marble counter before rolling to a stop right against my leather shoe.

Her face drained of color until she looked like a walking corpse. ""Ethan... I was only preparing a digestive tea for the children. To calm their nerves after the commotion.""

I bent down, picked up the bottle, and held it up to the kitchen chandelier. The label had been peeled off, but a faint serial code remained stamped near the rim. ""You're done lying to me. Dr. Vance didn't prescribe this. In fact, Dr. Vance is Marcus's cousin, and he hasn't written a pediatric script for this household since Claire died.""

""You don't understand the pressure I’ve been under!"" Margaret's voice cracked, rising into a shrill, hysterical pitch. ""Raising your dead wife's brats while you galivant around the globe making billions! You think throwing money at staff makes you a father? You weren't here when they screamed for hours! You weren't here when Noah had a fever that wouldn't break! I kept this house standing while you hid in your boardroom!""

""You poisoned my sons to keep them silent while you and Julian conspired to steal their inheritance,"" I barked, stepping toward her with lethal calm. ""I found the Cayman transfers, Margaret. I found the emails. I know about the CPS report you drafted.""

The mention of Julian's name shattered whatever remaining composure she possessed. Her hands began to shake violently. ""Julian was supposed to protect me! He promised me ten percent of the conservatorship trust! You never appreciated what I did for this family! Your father treated me like a servant, and you treated me like a ghost!""

""You are a servant,"" I said coldly. ""And after today, you're an inmate.""

Right on cue, the kitchen side doors swung open. Marcus Vance strode in, flanked by three uniformed private security guards. His gaze swept the kitchen, taking in Margaret’s wild eyes, the steaming teapot, and the amber bottle in my hand.

""Sir?"" Marcus asked, his hand resting firmly on his holstered firearm.

""Secure Margaret in the guardhouse,"" I ordered. ""Call the District Attorney directly. Tell him Ethan Caldwell has evidence of corporate embezzlement, child endangerment, and attempted extortion. And call an ambulance with a pediatric toxicology team right now.""

""You can't prove anything!"" Margaret shrieked as two guards took her by the arms. She thrashed against their grip, her neat bun unraveling into wild gray strands. ""Julian will bury you in court, Ethan! The whole world will know you're an absentee father whose children don't even know his name! They call that immigrant whore their mother! You're nothing! You hear me? You're nothing!""

Her screams echoed down the long marble hallway until the exterior heavy door slammed shut, cutting her off mid-curse.
