Chapter 4 - The Midnight Invasion

By one o'clock that morning, the autumn mist was rising thick and cold off the glassy surface of Lake Minnetonka. The two-story cedar and stone house stood proud against the dark pine trees, its wraparound porch glowing softly beneath warm exterior lantern lights.
I sat in Grandpa Arthur’s favorite leather armchair in the second-floor study, sipping hot cinnamon tea while watching the live multi-camera security feeds on my laptop. Beside me sat Katherine Brooks, my sharp, forty-two-year-old estate litigation attorney, reviewing property filings over a cup of black coffee.
"The county sheriff just confirmed receipt of the emergency injunction, Emily," Katherine said, stamping a document with a red seal. "Any unauthorized entry onto this parcel is now classified as aggravated criminal trespass."
Suddenly, the screen in the lower-left corner flashed yellow as the perimeter motion sensors tripped along the main gravel driveway. Headlights cut through the swirling fog, illuminating Ryan’s black pickup truck followed closely by Daniel’s leased German sedan.
"They actually came," I murmured, watching the two vehicles pull past the locked iron gate that they had somehow managed to force open with a tow cable.
Ryan stepped out of his truck holding a crowbar, his face contorted in drunken, desperate rage as Vanessa huddled inside the cab with their two young daughters asleep in the back. Daniel emerged from his car, looking anxious, pacing along the driveway while checking his phone every three seconds.
"Break the back French doors!" Ryan shouted into the quiet night, his voice carrying clearly through the audio sensors. "Once we're inside, we establish squatter tenancy! The state police can't evict us without a sixty-day court hearing!"
"That was Daniel's brilliant legal advice, I assume," Katherine remarked with a cold, disgusted scoff. "A first-year law school myth that gets people shot or locked up."
I watched Ryan approach the back patio, raising the crowbar to strike the tempered glass of the lakeside sitting room. Before the steel could touch the glass, two powerful spotlights mounted beneath the eaves ignited, blinding both men with five thousand lumens of piercing white light.
An ear-splitting siren pierced the calm of the lake, echoing off the surrounding hills like an air-raid alarm. At the same moment, two black patrol cruisers from the Minnetonka Police Department rolled silently around the circular bend, blocking the driveway and trapping both vehicles against the closed gate.

Four officers stepped out with flashlights drawn, their hands resting firmly on their utility belts. "Drop the weapon! Drop the crowbar immediately and put your hands on top of your head!"
Ryan dropped the iron bar onto the slate patio with a loud, clattering bang, falling to his knees with his hands raised in terror. Daniel tried to scramble back toward his car, but an officer grabbed his shoulder, shoving him against the hood with practiced efficiency.
