Chapter 2 - The Conspirators Unmasked

The murmurs among the eighty wedding guests erupted into a cacophony of whispers, gasps, and frantic sidelong glances. Vanessa stood up, her heavily contoured face twisted in absolute fury as she pointed a manicured finger at me.
"You selfish, vindictive little snake!" Vanessa shrieked, forgetting all about her high-society airs in front of Daniel's wealthy relatives. "We already put down a non-refundable deposit on interior decorators for the lake house! We told the private academy our kids were moving into that district next month!"
"Then you should probably call the decorator and ask for a refund, Vanessa," I replied, not breaking my calm stride as I stood near the microphone podium. "Because you are currently scheduled to be completely homeless by next Tuesday."
Ryan’s face flushed an alarming shade of mottled purple. He lunged around the head table toward me, but two catering security guards stepped cleanly into his path.
"Emily, you listen to me right now!" Ryan roared, thrashing against the guards' steady grip. "Dad sold my townhouse three days ago! The closing is on Monday! If I can't move into the lake house, my family has nowhere to live!"
"You should have thought about where your family was going to live before you conspired with my fiancé to forge my signature on a quitclaim deed," I said coldly.
Daniel stepped up beside Ryan, his hands raised in a pathetic attempt to play the peacemaker before his parents, who were watching in utter horror from the second row. "Emily, please, let's go outside and talk about this like rational adults. You're ruining our wedding eve over a piece of real estate."
"There is no wedding eve, Daniel," I said, slipping off the two-carat diamond engagement ring he had financed on an installment plan.
I tossed the ring onto the tablecloth in front of him, where it bounced twice before coming to rest beside his half-empty wine glass. The sharp metallic click echoed through the microphone like a gavel striking a block.
"What did you just do?" Daniel gasped, staring at the glittering band as if his entire future had just dissolved into thin air. "Emily, we're getting married in thirty-six hours! The caterers, the cathedral, the guests from New York—"
"The cathedral is canceled. The caterers are canceled. And the lease on our downtown penthouse, which is in my name alone, has already been terminated," I announced calmly.
Daniel’s mother, Evelyn, clutched her pearl necklace, her eyes wide with indignation. "You can't do this to my son! Daniel has given you the best years of his youth! He sacrificed his corporate career to support your whims!"

"Your son spent the last three months trying to figure out how to leverage my inheritance to pay off his ninety-thousand-dollar secret gambling debt," I said, projecting a PDF bank statement onto the ballroom’s large slideshow projector with one tap on my phone.
The screen illuminated with black-and-white bank transfers showing Daniel funneling twenty thousand dollars from our joint wedding fund into an offshore sports betting platform. Daniel collapsed into his chair, burying his face in his trembling hands as his mother gasped in sheer horror.
