Chapter 6 - The Cracking Façade

""What is going on here?!"" Samantha shrieked, out of breath as she reached the playground mulch. She looked at me holding Mason, then at Brandon’s furious face. ""Mom?! What are you doing? Brandon told me you were stalking us!""
""Look at your son, Samantha!"" I commanded, turning Mason toward her. His cheeks were blotchy red, tears streaming down his nose, his small wrist showing faint red marks where Brandon had gripped him too hard. ""Look at him and tell me this is what a loving father looks like!""
Samantha froze, her maternal instincts momentarily piercing through the dense fog of Brandon’s manipulations. She reached out toward Mason. ""Mason... baby, what happened?""
""He grabbed me, Mommy!"" Mason cried, clinging to me even tighter. ""He said Nana threw me away! He said you were too busy for me!""
Samantha gasped, looking up at Brandon. ""Brandon... did you grab him? You promised me you’d gently bring him home from school so I could finish dealing with the venue deposits!""
""The kid was throwing a tantrum in public, Samantha!"" Brandon barked, his voice losing all veneer of patience. ""He was acting out because your mother has poisoned his mind! And speaking of the venue deposits—why are you lingering out here? Did you get the loan authorization from your credit union or not?""
The question hung in the air like a poisoned dart. Samantha blinked, stepping back half a step. The romantic illusion was splintering right before her eyes.
""No, Brandon,"" Samantha said, her voice shaking. ""The credit union denied my personal loan. They said my debt-to-income ratio was completely skewed because you put my name as a personal guarantor on the Mission Valley commercial lease. Why would they say that, Brandon? You told me I was signing as a corporate witness, not a personal guarantor!""
I stepped forward, keeping Mason secured in my arms. ""Because that’s what predators do, Samantha. They bleed you dry, ruin your credit, and when you have nothing left, they demand you extort your widowed mother to keep the lie alive.""
""Shut your mouth!"" Brandon lunged forward, his hand reaching out to grab my shoulder.
Before he could touch me, a heavy hand clamped down onto Brandon’s collarbone, shoving him backward with astonishing force. Brandon stumbled, losing his balance and falling hard onto the wood chips.

Standing between us was Detective Miller, accompanied by two uniformed San Diego Police officers.
""Brandon Miller,"" Detective Miller said, pulling out a laminated badge and a sheaf of stamped documents. ""Step away from the women and the child. You are being placed under arrest pursuant to an indictment issued this afternoon by the California Attorney General’s Special Crimes Division for securities fraud, grand theft by false pretenses, and forgery.""
