Chapter 2 - The Echoes of the Departed

The speaker hissed with white noise, the distinct rustle of coastal wind against a microphone, followed by the deep, unmistakable baritone of my late husband. Arthur’s voice filled the high-ceilinged dining room, vibrant and alive, vibrating off the wine glasses and silencing every man at the table.
""Patricia, sweetheart, if you're listening to this recording, it means Brandon has finally pushed you into a corner, just like I knew he would.""
Samantha gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. Her knuckles turned white against her lips. Brandon’s easy smirk froze into an ugly, crooked line.
""Three weeks ago, Brandon approached me in the garage during Samantha’s birthday party,"" Arthur’s recorded voice continued, completely calm, methodical, and devastating. ""He asked me to cosign on a mezzanine loan for his commercial real estate development in Chula Vista. He told me that if I didn't back him with our home equity, he would call off the engagement, take Samantha to Dallas, and ensure our unborn grandchild was born a thousand miles away. He tried to blackmail a dying man, Patricia. He didn't know I kept a micro-recorder in my breast pocket every time he entered our driveway.""
The silence in the private room was suffocating. Lawyer Vance’s eyes darted nervously between Brandon and the legal paperwork spread out on the tablecloth. The other two junior associates looked down at their pristine leather folios, suddenly terrified of what their firm had walked into.
Brandon slammed his palms down on the table, rattling the silverware. ""Turn that garbage off! That’s an illegal wiretap under California penal code! You can’t use that in court!""
""I’m not in court, Brandon,"" I replied, staring directly into his reddening face. ""I’m at dinner with my daughter. And you’re not the only one who knows how to hire counsel.""
The recorder clicked forward, switching to a second file. This time, Arthur’s voice was accompanied by another man’s—harsh, clinical, and precise.
""Mr. Coleman, this is Detective Miller from the forensic accounting unit. We cross-referenced Brandon Miller’s offshore LLCs in Belize. The Chula Vista project is an outright shell. He has fifty-four liens pending across San Diego County, and his prior construction firm filed for fraudulent Chapter 7 liquidation under three separate aliases. If he marries your daughter without an ironclad prenuptial agreement, her marital community property will be absorbed by creditors within six months.""
Samantha turned her head toward Brandon, her eyes wide with shock. ""Brandon... what is that man talking about? You told me you owned that Chula Vista parcel free and clear. You told me the bank held the deed in escrow!""
""It’s fabricated nonsense!"" Brandon hissed, his voice cracking, losing every drop of its rehearsed charm. He grabbed Samantha’s forearm, squeezing it tight. ""Your mother hated me from day one! She paid someone to deep-fake Arthur’s voice to drive a wedge between us! She doesn't want you to be happy, Samantha! Look at her! She’s trying to control you with ghost stories!""
""Arthur died eight years ago, Brandon,"" I said, my voice dropping to a steady, quiet whisper. ""Deep-fakes didn't exist like that eight years ago. And the original files are sitting in a fireproof safety deposit box at First National Bank, along with the certified certified audit reports signed by Arthur’s private investigator.""

I reached forward, picked up the power-of-attorney contract, and tore it cleanly in half. The sound of ripping paper was sharp as a gunshot.
""You brought these three gentlemen here to force me out of my home to bail out your failing shell companies. You used my five-year-old grandson as a hostage to pay off your private debts."" I dropped the torn pieces onto Brandon’s pristine white porcelain plate. ""Dinner is over.""
