Chapter 6 - Vivian’s Silver Mask Falls

The screens did not shut down. Instead, they transitioned instantly to a rapid-fire sequence of high-resolution evidentiary documents: certified wire transfer receipts, Cayman Island shell company registrations, and scanned corporate resolutions bearing my father’s forged signature. Across the bottom of each screen, the red forensic audit stamp of the SEC was unmistakably visible.
Ethan turned back toward the altar, his face contorted in a mixture of blind rage and sheer terror. ""Lauren! What the hell did you do?""
I did not flinch. I did not step back. I pulled the small wireless lapel microphone from the lace bodice of my gown, switched it on, and addressed the entire two-hundred-person audience with calm, measured authority.
""Ethan Cole did not bring you here today to celebrate a marriage,"" I said, my voice carrying cleanly to every corner of the sanctuary and directly into the encrypted live-stream broadcast to our international offices. ""He brought you here to witness the hostile, fraudulent acquisition of Hartwell Medical Systems. Three hours ago, in my suite at the Grand Plaza, he assaulted me when I refused to sign away my father's operational legacy.""
A woman in the fourth row screamed in horror. Several guests reached for their smartphones, frantically recording the scene as the evidence continued to scroll across the overhead displays.
Down in the front pew, Vivian Cole sprang to her feet. The polished, aristocratic demeanor she had cultivated for four decades dissolved instantly into hysterical fury. She pushed past two family members and pointed a diamond-encrusted finger directly at my face.
""You ungrateful little bitch!"" Vivian shrieked, her voice screeching across the altar steps. ""My son saved you from your pathetic grief! Your father's company was bleeding cash until we stepped in to structure your debt! You think you can stand up there in that white dress and slander our family name?""
""Your son didn't save anything, Vivian,"" I replied into the microphone, my tone freezing the room. ""Your family firm has been insolvent for nine months. You used your late husband's political connections to conceal an SEC investigation into your offshore accounts. And as of midnight yesterday, my trust fund purchased your entire portfolio of secondary debt. Cole Meridian doesn't own Hartwell. Hartwell owns you.""
Vivian’s jaw dropped. The silver fabric of her dress seemed to drain of color as the full reality of my words settled into her mind. She looked toward Ethan, her eyes wide with mounting panic. ""Ethan... is this true? What did you do with the Cayman notes?""

Ethan didn't answer his mother. His eyes were wild, bloodshot, and locked entirely on me. He took two menacing steps across the marble platform, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned paper-white.
""You think you're clever, don't you?"" he snarled, dropping all pretense of civility as he closed the distance between us. ""You think you can play these games with me in front of these people? I will burn Hartwell Medical to the ground before I let you walk away from this altar!""
