Chapter 4 - The Sound System Trap

Ten minutes before the processional began, I slipped into the chapel’s private choir room beneath the bell tower. My maid of honor, Claire, was waiting near the doorway, her hands trembling as she saw the dark bruise blooming across my jawline.

""Lauren! Oh my God, what happened to your face?"" Claire gasped, reaching into her purse for a makeup compact. ""Ethan did this, didn't he? I'm calling security right now. We are stopping this entire event immediately.""

""Do not call security,"" I said quietly, grabbing her wrist with my uninjured hand. ""Listen to me very carefully, Claire. If we call off the wedding right now, Ethan walks out that side door, gets into his limousine, and his crisis attorneys go to work. By dinner time, he’ll have filed for emergency injunctions against our board. We have one chance to completely destroy him before he can hide his assets.""

Claire stared at me, her eyes wide with shock. ""What do you need me to do?""

""I need you to find Julian,"" I said, handing her the small encrypted flash drive from my purse.

Julian Miller was St. Matthew’s lead audio engineer and a former biomedical systems technician who had worked under my father’s charitable foundation for over a decade. He had spent the last two days wiring the chapel with state-of-the-art audiovisual equipment for the high-profile ceremony. The entire service was being privately broadcast on an encrypted live-feed to international investors and hospital board members in Zurich, Tokyo, and London who could not attend in person.

""Tell Julian that protocol zero is active,"" I instructed Claire, keeping my voice steady and urgent. ""He knows the file structure. The master audio system is connected to the overhead sanctuary speakers and the four massive ultra-HD screens flanking the main altar. When I reach the front platform and the pastor asks for objections, Ethan will expect me to say 'I do.' That is Julian’s cue.""

""Lauren, Ethan’s security team has two bodyguards standing at the back of the chapel,"" Claire whispered nervously, tucking the drive inside her corsage. ""They will cut the power if they realize what you’re doing.""

""Julian has the primary console locked behind a biometric master key in the upper sound booth,"" I answered with an icy smile. ""Once the playback sequence begins, the chapel’s internal server locks down for eight straight minutes. Not even the venue manager can pull the plug without shutting down the entire district grid.""

Claire nodded firmly, her initial panic completely replaced by pure determination. ""Consider it done. I'll make sure the signal is pushed to the satellite stream as well. The overseas board will see every single second of it.""

She slipped out through the back vestry corridor. I turned toward the full-length mirror near the coat racks. The split on my lip had stopped bleeding, leaving a dark, crusted line against my pale skin. The bruise on my cheek was prominent, contrasting sharply with the flawless white fabric of my designer gown.

I took a slow, deep breath, gathering the full weight of my father’s memory inside my chest. Thomas Hartwell had spent his entire life building diagnostic tools to save human beings from hidden, terminal decay. Today, I was going to use those same foundational principles to excise a cancer that was attempting to devour my family’s name.

The opening strains of the pipe organ began to resonate through the heavy wooden timbers of the chapel floor. It was time. I pushed open the double doors of the choir room, stepped into the central foyer, and took my position at the back of the center aisle.
