Chapter 5 - Broadcast to the Boardroom

The heavy sanctuary doors swung outward, revealing the entire two-hundred-person congregation rising simultaneously to their feet. The organ thundered with traditional majesty, its deep bass frequencies vibrating through the floorboards. I stepped forward into the sea of silk, linen, and expensive cologne, holding my bouquet of white calla lilies tightly against my chest.
As I walked down the aisle, the initial murmurs began to ripple through the front rows. People leaned across the pews, nudging their spouses. The whisper network traveled faster than the organ notes: Look at her face. Look at her lip. What happened to her veil?
Ethan stood upon the raised dais, his posture rigid and commanding. Beside him, his best man, Carter, wore an identical smirk of arrogant satisfaction. Ethan’s gaze never wavered from my face. When I finally reached the bottom step of the altar, he extended his manicured hand. I took it, stepping up beside him under the towering floral arch.
""Dearly beloved,"" the pastor began, his voice strained and noticeably higher in pitch than usual. He kept his eyes glued to the printed liturgy, resolutely refusing to look directly at the swollen purple contusion decorating the right side of my face. ""We are gathered here today in the presence of God and these witnesses to join this man and this woman in holy matrimony.""
Ethan’s grip tightened around my injured wrist, his thumb deliberately pressing into the bruised tissue. ""Smile for the cameras, Lauren,"" he muttered through barely parted lips. ""You're making the guests nervous.""
The pastor cleared his throat and proceeded to the standard liturgical challenge. ""If any person present can show just cause why these two should not be lawfully joined together, let them speak now, or forever hold their peace.""
The sanctuary went utterly silent. You could have heard a pin drop against the polished stone.
Ethan turned his head slightly toward me, ready to prompt the vows.
Suddenly, a loud, sharp digital beep tore through the quiet.
Above the altar, the massive sixty-foot high-definition screens—originally set up to project live, high-angle close-ups of the ring exchange—flickered violently. The stained-glass graphic vanished, replaced by an stark, high-resolution image of Cole Meridian’s actual bank balances.
A collective gasp echoed across the room.
""What is that?"" Ethan hissed, his head whipping around toward the audio booth at the back of the balcony. ""Carter, get the sound guy down here right now!""
Before Carter could even step off the altar platform, the chapel's surround-sound audio system crackled to life with terrifying clarity. A familiar, recorded voice boomed through the sanctuary rafters. It was Ethan’s voice, recorded only two weeks ago in his private penthouse office:
""Once the marriage is legally finalized, Lauren won't have the legal standing to challenge the asset transfers. Her father left the voting trust tied to spousal consent. We strip Hartwell Medical of its European patents, liquidate their secondary manufacturing plants to satisfy the Cayman syndicate, and leave the core shell company to absorb the three-hundred-million-dollar default. By the time she realizes what happened, she’ll be begging me for an allowance.""

The congregation erupted into chaos. Three senior Hartwell board members in the third row stood up instantly, their faces pale with shock.
""Shut it off!"" Ethan roared, letting go of my hand and lunging toward the side steps of the stage. ""Shut the damn system down right now!""
