Chapter 8 - The Federal Appointment

Three months later, the cherry blossoms were beginning to bud along the tidal basin in Washington, D.C.
The East Room of the White House was filled with cabinet secretaries, military leaders, foreign ambassadors, and senior members of the Senate Commerce Committee.
The morning sun poured through the towering arched windows, casting brilliant golden light across the gilded moldings and portraits of historic leaders.
I stood near the front row of the executive dais, wearing an impeccably tailored navy pantsuit, diamond stud earrings, and my hair pinned into an elegant, commanding updo.
Beside me stood Ethan, looking stunning in a bespoke three-piece charcoal suit, his gray eyes shining with fierce, uncontainable pride as he held my hand.
The President of the United States stepped to the podium, adjusting his reading glasses as the room fell into respectful silence.
"Ladies and gentlemen," the President announced, his voice carrying across the historic chamber.
"Today, we swear in our new Undersecretary of Maritime Commerce and National Infrastructure, Meredith Campbell-Cross."
The entire room erupted into warm, thunderous applause from leaders who had watched my forensic audits save billions of dollars in taxpayer infrastructure funds over the past five years.
I stepped up to the dais, placed my left hand on my grandmother’s vintage family Bible, and raised my right hand into the air.
"I, Meredith Campbell-Cross, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States..."
As I recited the sacred oath, my mind drifted for a brief second to that cold hotel courtyard in Boston.
I remembered the cruel laughter, the splash of the freezing water, and my father's sneering voice telling three hundred people that I would never amount to anything.
They had tried to bury me in the dark.
They had tried to make me feel small so they could feel tall.
They had forgotten that an oak tree doesn't break when the wind howls; it simply drives its roots deeper into the bedrock until it rises above the entire forest.
"Congratulations, Madame Undersecretary," the President smiled warmly, shaking my hand as the room broke into another standing ovation.
Reporters from every major news network raised their cameras, their flashes strobe-lighting the room, capturing the triumphant moment for tomorrow’s front pages.
I turned toward the front row, meeting Ethan’s gaze.

He didn't just smile; he raised his champagne flute toward me, mouthing three simple words that healed every lingering scar from my childhood:
I am proud of you.
