Chapter 4 - The Terrace Eviction

Robert Campbell lunged forward, his face purple with rage, his fists clenched as if he intended to strike me again.
"You ungrateful little bitch!" Robert roared.
Before his hands could come within three feet of my shoulder, Ethan’s lead security agent stepped into the gap.
With a single, lightning-fast maneuver, the agent seized Robert’s right wrist, twisted his arm behind his back, and forced the senior attorney down onto his knees on the carpeted floor.
Robert cried out in pain, his glasses flying off his nose and skidding across the polished marble.
"Don't touch him!" Patricia shrieked, rushing forward to claw at the agent's dark suit.
Two more federal marshals stepped through the terrace doors, displaying gold badges and sealed warrants.
"Robert Campbell," the lead marshal announced, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling.
"You are being served with an immediate federal subpoena regarding the ongoing grand jury investigation into judicial bribery and maritime contract tampering."
The ballroom went completely, terrifyingly still.
Three hundred of Boston’s most elite citizens stood frozen, their mouths open, watching the city's most untouchable corporate litigator pinned to the floor in handcuffs at his own daughter's wedding reception.
"What bribery?" Robert choked out, his cheek pressed flat against the carpet.
"This is slander! Cross fabricated this to humiliate me!"
Marcus stepped forward, pulling an iPad from his briefcase and connecting it wirelessly to the ballroom's massive presentation projector.
The projector clicked on, illuminating a twenty-foot digital screen behind the wedding cake.
Displayed in high-definition clarity were three years of bank wire transfers from Robert Campbell’s offshore shell company in the Cayman Islands directly to the private accounts of two state appellate court judges.
Attached to the wires were emails originating from Robert’s private laptop:
“Ensure the Wellington zoning permits pass without environmental review. Cross Industries will never notice the discrepancy.”
"You used my wife's federal department to hide your kickbacks, Robert," Ethan said, looking down at the groveling man with absolute, chilling disgust.
"You thought Meredith was just an awkward girl working a government desk. You didn't realize she was the forensic auditor who uncovered your paper trail six months ago."
Robert’s eyes snapped up toward me, widening with pure, paralyzed horror.
He realized in an instant that the daughter he had dismissed as a failure had been holding the match that would burn his entire empire to the ground.
"Meredith... please," Robert wept, tears finally streaming down his wrinkled face, pooling on the floor.
"I am your father. I raised you. I gave you everything."
May you like
"You gave me table nineteen, Robert," I answered, my voice steady, clear, and unshakeable.
"And now, you belong in a cell."
