Chapter 8 - The Settlement Terms

Evelyn slid three thick sets of legal documents across the conference table. The sound of the crisp paper sliding across the wood was like a gavel striking stone.

""Here are my final terms,"" I announced through the speaker. ""Listen carefully, because this is the only offer you will ever receive. If you reject it, Evelyn will file for immediate liquidation of all remaining assets, and you will leave with absolutely zero.""

Mom wiped her nose with a crumpled tissue, her hands shaking as she pulled the documents closer. ""We’re listening, Claire. We’ll do whatever you want.""

""First,"" I began. ""Elmwood Terrace will be sold on the open market. The proceeds will go entirely to my holding company to cover the back taxes, insurance, and interest you failed to pay. However, I will not leave you homeless. I have purchased a modest, two-bedroom condominium in an active senior living community forty miles upstate.""

Mom gasped. ""Forty miles?! Away from all my friends?! A condo?!""

""Take it or find an apartment under your own credit, Mom,"" I said without hesitation. ""Your name will not be on the deed. The property remains in my trust. You will live there rent-free, and the HOA dues will be paid directly by my office. But there will be no luxury cars, no country club memberships, and no supplementary credit cards. If you violate the community rules, the lease terminates.""

Dad swallowed hard, his throat bobbing. ""And my contracting business?""

""The business is dissolved,"" I stated firmly. ""The equipment has already been sold to settle the primary vendor defaults. You are sixty-two years old, Dad. You are going to take the entry-level estimator position my lawyer arranged for you at a regional building supplier. You will earn a modest hourly wage, pay for your own groceries, and live within your means. You will no longer run companies with my money.""

Lauren looked up, her breathing shallow. ""And me? What about my debt? What about the two hundred thousand dollars?""

""Velvet & Vine is being liquidated to offset the lease penalties,"" I told her. ""I am forgiving the remaining personal promissory note of $180,000 on one condition: you sign a comprehensive non-disclosure and non-disparagement agreement. You will never mention my name, my businesses, or my private life on social media, in interviews, or to any third party. If you post one single defamatory video or attempt to play the victim online, the full debt immediately accelerates, with interest, and Evelyn will file for immediate wage garnishment.""

Lauren looked down at the pen sitting beside the papers. Her hands were trembling with rage, but beneath the anger was the cold, unmistakable realization that she had zero leverage.

""And if I need money for rent?"" she whispered.

""Then you get a job,"" I answered. ""A real job. With a boss, a schedule, and an hourly wage. You can wait tables, you can fold clothes at retail shops, or you can work reception. Just like I did when I was putting myself through business school while you were spending my tuition money on designer shoes.""

""Claire..."" Mom wept, looking up at the camera with genuine terror. ""When... when will we see you? When are you coming home for Sunday dinner?""

I looked at the three of them—the people whose approval I had spent my entire youth desperately trying to purchase.

""You won't,"" I said simply. ""Sunday dinners are over. Birthdays are over. Holidays are over. You made your choice on the rooftop. You picked Lauren's party. Now, you have to live with the bill.""

""Sign the documents,"" Evelyn told them, her voice firm and absolute. ""Or we proceed to court this afternoon.""

One by one, they picked up the pens.

Dad signed first, his hand trembling as he initialed each page.

Mom signed through her tears, staining the bottom corner of the deed transfer.

Lauren stared at the signature line for a long, agonizing minute before scribbling her name with frantic, resentful strokes.

The documents were pushed back to Evelyn.

""The video conference is concluded,"" I said, and clicked the disconnect button.
