Chapter 3 - The Morning Ambush

Morning broke with a pale, cold sun slipping over the city skyline. The morning shift nurse, a gentle woman named Maria, stepped into my room carrying fresh bandages, IV bags, and a warm cup of herbal tea.
""You look remarkably rested for someone who had two vertebrae fused yesterday,"" Maria smiled, checking my surgical drainage tube and carefully swabbing the suture site.
""I haven't slept this deeply in twelve years,"" I replied honestly.
Down in the parking garage, however, a frantic silver Mercedes was squealing around the concrete ramps. Because I hadn't yet severed the vehicle tracking app associated with the family fleet, I saw the notification on my tablet: Lauren’s company car had entered the hospital complex at 7:15 AM.
Mom had never visited me in a hospital before. When I had my appendix removed at twenty-two, she told me parking was too expensive and sent an emoji text. When I broke my wrist in college, she told me to take public transit to the clinic. Yet here she was, barging through the double fire doors of the surgical recovery floor, followed closely by Dad and a disheveled Lauren, who was still wearing her wrinkled birthday dress, her mascara smeared beneath her swollen eyes.
They stormed into my room without knocking, Dad leading the charge with his face flushed crimson.
""What the hell is wrong with you, Claire?!"" Dad bellowed, heedless of the other recovery patients on the floor. ""Do you have any idea what happened last night?! Do you have any idea what you put your sister through?!""
Maria turned around sharply, her face hardening. ""Excuse me! This is a restricted post-op recovery unit. Lower your voice or I will call hospital security.""
""Get out of our way, this is a family matter!"" Lauren spat, lunging toward the foot of my bed. She slammed both hands onto the safety railing, vibrating the mattress and sending a dull shock of pain through my spinal incision. ""You embarrassed me in front of everyone! The police were standing at the elevator doors! Mom and Dad had to hand over their personal jewelry to the venue manager just so they wouldn't arrest me on the spot! Why did you shut down the cards?!""
I took a slow sip of my tea, completely unbothered by her hysterics. ""I didn't authorize a fifty-thousand-dollar rooftop party on my company account.""
""It was a business expense!"" Lauren screamed. ""I invited high-profile networking clients! You've always covered it! You’ve paid for my birthday every year!""
""Then consider this year my resignation,"" I said, setting the ceramic mug down with a clean, delicate clink.
Mom rushed to the side of the bed, her face contorting into an exaggerated mask of maternal grief. She reached to grab my hand, but I pulled it away before she could make contact.
""Claire, darling, please,"" Mom wept, dabbing at dry eyes with a monogrammed handkerchief. ""We know you were upset because we couldn't be here yesterday. We admit it! We should have stopped by before the dinner! But you can't punish your sister like this! She’s ruined! Her reputation is destroyed! Just call the bank, tell them it was an administrative glitch, and pay the venue so we can get my diamond necklace back!""
""I'm not upset you didn't come,"" I said, looking Mom dead in the eyes.
Mom blinked, stunned. ""You... you aren't?""
""No. I'm grateful,"" I said calmly. ""Because your absence finally broke the spell. For twelve years, I paid your mortgages, covered your debt, funded Lauren's fake lifestyle, and paid for every family vacation, hoping that one day you would treat me like a daughter instead of an endless financial reservoir. Yesterday, while a surgeon was cutting into my back, you clinked glasses and laughed about how depressing I was. You showed me my exact value in this family.""

""You selfish, ungrateful little brat!"" Dad roared, pointing a trembling finger in my face. ""Everything you have is because of this family! You owe us!""
""I don't owe you a single cent,"" I said. ""In fact, according to the contracts you all signed over the years... you owe me.""
