Chapter 7 - The Desperate Surrender

Two weeks after the rooftop disaster, the reality of their situation had fully crushed my family’s defiance.

Dad had attempted to consult three different civil litigation attorneys to sue me for ""stolen family assets."" Every single lawyer took one look at my corporate contracts, the clean legal ownership structures, and Dad’s signature on the promissory notes, and told him the exact same thing: If you take this to court, you will not only lose immediately, but you will also be ordered to pay Claire's six-figure legal defense fees.

Without my funding, Lauren’s luxury apartment complex issued an eviction warning when her rent check bounced. Her car had already been repossessed from the street outside her building. She was forced to take the city bus with her designer bags clutched to her chest, hiding behind dark sunglasses so nobody from her former social circle would recognize her.

And Elmwood Terrace was surrounded by packing boxes.

Mom had spent days crying on the front porch, hoping the neighbors would rally to her defense. But the neighbors had spent years listening to Mom brag about how wealthy she was while looking down her nose at them. When they learned the truth, nobody offered a spare bedroom.

On Thursday morning, Evelyn contacted me.

""Claire, they’re at my office. All three of them. They’ve been waiting in the lobby for three hours. They’re begging for an audience. They say they’ll sign anything if you just give them a settlement.""

I took a deep breath. My back was healing well; I was walking without a cane now, the staples had been removed cleanly, and the deep, nerve-pinching agony that had plagued me for years was finally beginning to subside.

""Set up a video conference,"" I told Evelyn. ""I will not be in the same room with them, but I will deliver their terms.""

Ten minutes later, Evelyn’s conference room appeared on my monitor.

The contrast was staggering.

Two weeks ago, they were gleaming under penthouse chandeliers, drinking four-hundred-dollar champagne, mocking me while I lay helpless. Now, they looked shattered. Mom was wearing an old track jacket, her hair unstyled, her eyes sunken and red. Dad sat hunched over the mahogany table, looking like a defeated old man whose bluster had been completely drained. Lauren sat in the corner, staring at the floor, her arms tightly crossed, looking like a petulant child who had finally realized the world didn't revolve around her tantrums.

""Claire?"" Mom gasped the moment my face appeared on the large wall screen. She lunged toward the camera. ""Claire, please! Look at us! We have nowhere to go! We are packing our clothes into garbage bags! You can't do this to your own blood!""

""I am looking at you, Mom,"" I said through the microphone, my voice measured and cool. ""And for the first time, you are looking at reality.""

""Claire, I made mistakes,"" Dad muttered, his voice hoarse, refusing to meet my eyes on the screen. ""I was harsh. I was angry. But I built you up. You have millions, Claire! You have investments, properties! We have nothing! How can you sleep at night knowing your mother and father are facing the street?!""

""I sleep very well, Dad, because for twelve years, I stayed awake worrying about how to keep you out of jail, how to keep Mom from losing her house, and how to keep Lauren out of bankruptcy. And you repaid me by treating me like garbage.""

""What do you want from us?!"" Lauren suddenly sobbed, looking up with raw fury and desperation. ""You ruined my company! You took my car! You humiliated me in front of the entire city! Are you happy now?! Is your revenge complete?!""

""This was never revenge, Lauren,"" I said softly. ""This is simply the consequence of your own choices. You wanted to play the high-society boss, but you never wanted to do the work. You wanted to laugh at me while I was bleeding, while expecting me to foot the bill for your party. The party is over.""
