Chapter 1 - The Swab in the Midnight Ward

The pediatrician I summoned, Dr. Robert Sterling, arrived at the Thorne estate just past eleven o'clock with a locked forensic diagnostic kit.
He moved quietly through the dimly lit halls of the third floor, past portraits of Thorne ancestors whose cold oil-painted eyes seemed to judge every shadow.
Inside the guest bedroom, Annie lay curled on the enormous bed, breathing in shallow, fevered rasps while clutching her battered threadbare teddy bear.
Dr. Sterling gently swabbed the inside of the child’s cheek, securing the specimen in a tamper-evident tube bearing an encrypted barcode.
He then turned to me, drawing a sterile vial of blood from my forearm with clinical precision before sliding both into a climate-controlled lockbox.
"Alister, I'll run this under an expedited triple-panel assay at our private laboratory in Fort Lee," Dr. Sterling whispered, adjusting his spectacles.
"No technician will see the names attached. You will have a ninety-nine point nine nine percent definitive result before sunrise."
I walked him down to the rear portico to avoid the drawing room, where the murmur of hostile voices still lingered.
Gordon and Renata were still awake, sipping twenty-year-old scotch by the fireplace, their heads bent close in heated whispered consultation.
As I passed the library, Renata’s voice drifted through the partially open oak doors with piercing disdain.
"It's an obvious shakedown, Gordon. Daisy vanished four years ago with fifty million in bearer bonds from the offshore treasury account."
"Now she plants a sick orphan on the doorstep right when Harold is finalizing the trust succession papers. We cannot let that child stay another night."
I paused in the darkness of the corridor, my fingers tightening against the carved mahogany wainscoting.
Fifty million dollars.

Four years ago, that missing wire transfer had torn my world apart, weaponized by my family to convince me that the woman I loved was a calculated sociopath.
Now, looking at Annie’s worn, soaked shoes drying by the entrance mat, the tidy narrative of Daisy's sudden greed began to splinter into jagged, poisonous doubts.
