Chapter 7 - The True Measure of Value

At 3:15 PM, I stood by the front gates of Oakridge Elementary. The dismissal bell rang, and a flood of children poured out into the warm afternoon sunshine, their backpacks bouncing against their shoulders. Through the crowd, I saw ten-year-old Owen holding eight-year-old Lucas’s hand, leading him carefully through the crosswalk.
When Owen caught sight of my old, reliable pickup truck parked along the curb, his face lit up with an incandescent smile. He nudged Lucas, pointed at me, and both of them broke into a run, barreling toward me with unfiltered joy.
"Dad! You came early!" Lucas shouted, slamming into my legs with a bear hug that nearly knocked me off balance.
"Hey, buddy," I laughed, lifting him up and ruffling Owen’s hair. "I told you I was going to be here, didn't I?"
Owen looked up at me, his eyes searching my face with that quiet maturity he had developed far too young. "Is Grant’s car done? Mom said you might have to work all weekend because of the big bill."
I kneeled down so I was looking directly into both of their eyes. "The car is completely finished, guys. And my work is done. Starting right now, you two are coming home with me. Full time."
Lucas gasped, his eyes widening. "Like... our real home? With the bunk beds and the big backyard?"
May you like
"That’s right," I smiled, feeling a warmth in my chest that no amount of money could ever buy. "Your real home. And we have to hurry, because we’ve got tackle boxes to organize and fishing rods to load up. The lake isn't going to fish itself tomorrow morning."
Both boys erupted into cheers, scrambling into the cab of the truck with their backpacks. As I pulled out into traffic, I glanced in the rearview mirror at their laughing, smiling faces. Melissa had told me I would spend my whole life fixing other people's cars and never own anything worth fixing. But as I watched my boys argue over who got to bait the first hook, I knew with absolute certainty that I possessed the only thing in this world that truly mattered.
