Chapter 4 - The Visit from the Badge

By 8:00 AM, I was pulling up the roll-up doors at my garage. The morning sun hit the front sign—Vance Automotive Specialists—painted by hand with cheap enamel three years ago. The shop was small, but the floors were swept clean, the tools were organized neatly along the magnetic racks, and the coffee machine in the corner hissed faithfully.
Around 9:30 AM, an unmarked black sedan pulled into the service lot. Two men in crisp dark suits stepped out, adjusting their ties against the morning breeze. The older man, carrying a leather briefcase, flashed a gold badge from the federal financial crimes division before extending a calloused hand.
"Mr. Evan Vance?" he asked, his tone measured and professional.
"I’m Evan. How can I help you, gentlemen?"
"I’m Special Agent Miller, this is Agent Davies. We’re handling the investigation regarding Mr. Grant Whitmore and Whitmore Development Group." Miller set the briefcase on my counter and opened it, revealing the clear plastic evidence bags containing copies of the exact alignment sheets, structural photographs, and invoices I had filed with the state board the night before. "We received your automated lien documentation and parts notification early this morning."
I gestured to two stools across from the parts desk. "I assume you found what you were looking for in the front clip?"
Agent Miller allowed a thin, rare smile to cross his face. "Mr. Vance, we’ve been trying to link Whitmore’s offshore holding accounts to the city’s school construction bond fund for eighteen months. We knew the ledger was being transported on encrypted drives, but every time we executed a warrant on his office or private residence, the documents were nowhere to be found. He was keeping the primary physical backups inside the secondary structural cavity of his personal vehicle."

"A vehicle he officially certified in writing as his own private property just twelve hours ago," I noted quietly.
"Precisely," Agent Davies added, leaning in. "When he refused to pay your invoice and signed your shop's statutory release form, he relinquished any legal defense that the modifications were performed by a previous owner or done without his explicit knowledge. He signed his name directly under a clause certifying that the entire front-end rebuild and its inner cavities were inspected and accepted by him. His attorney is having an absolute meltdown at the federal detention center right now."
