Chapter 6 - Protecting the Boys

I didn't let Melissa’s chaotic downward spiral bleed into the boys' lives. The moment I hung up, I called my family attorney, Sarah Jenkins, who had represented me during the grueling divorce three years prior. Sarah had seen every dirty trick Melissa and Grant had pulled in court, and she had spent years waiting for an opening to secure a fair, permanent custody arrangement.

"Sarah, Whitmore was arrested this morning by federal agents on charges of grand larceny, municipal fraud, and evidence tampering," I told her without preamble. "Melissa’s personal assets are frozen under federal forfeiture warrants, and their house is currently an active crime scene."

Sarah let out a slow whistle on the line. "Evan, this changes everything. The court cannot allow children to remain in a home that is subject to federal asset seizure, especially when the stepfather is facing a multi-decade prison sentence. I’m drafting an emergency ex-parte motion for sole physical custody right now. Where are Owen and Lucas?"

"They're at school," I replied. "They don't know anything yet, and I want to keep it that way."

"I'll meet you at the family court in two hours," Sarah said briskly. "Judge Harrison is presiding over the emergency docket today. She has zero tolerance for criminal endangerment or parents who use custody as financial leverage. Bring your documentation, your shop records, and the boys' school schedules."

By noon, I was standing in Judge Harrison’s wood-paneled courtroom. Melissa arrived late, her eyes swollen and red, wearing an oversized trench coat and looking completely unmoored without her usual retinue of luxury accessories. Her high-priced private attorney was nowhere to be found; he had withdrawn his representation the moment Grant’s federal indictment was unsealed, knowing that any fees paid from Whitmore's frozen accounts would be confiscated.

When Judge Harrison reviewed the federal arrest affidavits, the mechanic’s lien records, and the undeniable evidence of the unstable domestic environment at the Whitmore estate, her ruling was swift, decisive, and uncompromising.

"Custody of Owen and Lucas Vance is awarded immediately and exclusively to their father, Evan Vance," Judge Harrison stated, her gavel striking the wooden block with finality. "The mother is granted supervised visitation pending the outcome of the federal investigation into her involvement with the Whitmore financial network. Mr. Vance, you may collect your sons directly from school."

Melissa collapsed into her chair, her head buried in her hands, as the reality of everything she had thrown away finally crushed her.
