Chapter 6 - The Interrogation of Chloe

By ten o'clock that morning, the news of Anthony Vance’s arrest had sent shockwaves through New York’s financial district.

The midtown hedge fund where Anthony worked immediately issued an emergency press release terminating his employment for cause, freezing his remaining equity distributions, and locking down his office to allow federal forensic investigators to seize his hard drives.

Meanwhile, inside the Federal Plaza headquarters of the FBI in lower Manhattan, I sat in a soundproof observation room behind a two-way mirror, wearing my service dress uniform with my silver colonel eagles gleaming on my shoulders.

Across the glass, in interrogation room B, sat Chloe Davies—Anthony’s twenty-six-year-old administrative assistant and secret business partner.

She was dressed in a designer silk blouse and black slacks, her manicured hands trembling violently around a styrofoam cup of water as two federal counterintelligence agents laid out twenty-four pages of offshore banking manifests.

"Miss Davies," Agent Miller’s voice came through the observation speaker, calm and methodical. "The Delaware LLC, Meridian Luxe, was incorporated using your personal social security number and home address."

Chloe began to cry, shaking her head frantically. "Anthony told me it was an independent investment vehicle! He said it was his personal bonus capital from the hedge fund! He promised me we were going to launch our own boutique advisory firm next year!"

"Did he also tell you that the four hundred thousand dollars deposited into that account over the last eighteen months came directly from unauthorized transfers out of a Department of Defense consultant trust?" Agent Miller countered, sliding a highlighted transaction report across the metal table.

Chloe gasped, dropping her cup, water splashing across her lap. "Department of Defense? No! No, I swear to God I didn't know anything about military money! He said his wife was an heiress who didn't care about money!"

"His wife is a senior intelligence officer in the United States Army, Miss Davies," Miller replied coldly.

Chloe froze, her mouth hanging open in sheer, unadulterated panic. "An... an Army officer?"

"And the four hundred thousand dollars you accepted was classified as misappropriated federal property," Miller continued, leaning in close. "Furthermore, the commercial lease on your SoHo loft was co-signed by Anthony using stolen corporate identity credentials."

Chloe buried her face in her hands, her sobs turning into high-pitched, desperate wails. "I’ll cooperate! I’ll tell you everything! He has three encrypted flash drives hidden inside a false bottom in his golf bag at the New York Athletic Club!"

In the observation room, I took a slow sip of my black coffee, feeling a quiet, clinical satisfaction wash over my chest.

Anthony had believed he was an apex predator, a charming Manhattan player who could juggle a secret mistress, an exploited wife, and an embezzled fortune without ever leaving a footprint.

He had forgotten that amateurs always leave a trail of breadcrumbs, and narcissists always surround themselves with people who will trade their loyalty for a plea deal the very second the handcuffs rattle.

The door to the observation booth opened, and Brigadier General Robert Hayes, my commanding officer at the joint intelligence task force, walked in holding a manila folder.

"Good morning, Colonel Reed," General Hayes smiled, setting his cover on the console. "Looks like your domestic cleanup is proceeding with standard military efficiency."

I stood up, snapping a crisp salute. "Good morning, General."

"At ease, Marissa," Hayes chuckled, resting a hand on my shoulder. "The Secretary of the Army called my office twenty minutes ago. The defense procurement documents recovered from Vance’s broker were completely sealed before any foreign assets could access them. You prevented a catastrophic intelligence breach."

"Thank you, sir," I replied, looking back through the two-way glass at Chloe, who was currently signing a comprehensive sworn confession.

"What are your orders regarding the ex-husband, Marissa?" General Hayes asked, his tone shifting into serious, professional territory. "Because this involves compromised Level-3 clearance files, we can either remand him to civilian federal court, or the military tribunal can take primary jurisdiction under the Espionage Act."

I turned away from the glass, smoothing the front of my tailored uniform jacket, feeling an absolute, unbreakable peace settle into my spirit.

"Let the civilian courts have him, General," I answered softly.

"Why?" Hayes asked, raising an eyebrow in surprise. "A military court would give him thirty years at Fort Leavenworth without parole."

"Because at Leavenworth, he’s just an inmate," I said, a razor-thin smile touching my lips.

"In the federal penitentiary system, Anthony Vance will spend every single day waking up to the realization that his name, his country club standing, and his mother’s high-society pedigree mean absolutely nothing."

"And that, General, is the exact punishment he earned."
