Chapter 2 - The Hallway Ambush

The heavy thuds echoed through the foyer like artillery fire, ripping through the morning quiet.
Years of counter-intelligence and tactical deployments wiped away every lingering trace of sleep before my bare feet even hit the hardwood floor. My pulse stayed at a steady fifty-five beats per minute.
Another burst of furious pounding shook the brass deadbolt.
Then Eleanor’s screeching voice tore through the reinforced door.
"OPEN THIS DOOR RIGHT NOW, MARISSA!"
"You ungrateful little gold digger! You don't humiliate me in front of the New York elite and think you're going to walk away clean!"
I calmly stepped into the hallway, pulling on a silk robe, and checked the high-resolution security monitor mounted beside the entrance.
Eleanor stood outside, wrapped in a fur stole that had cost me twelve thousand dollars on our fourth anniversary, her makeup smeared with manic rage. Beside her stood Anthony, wearing an expensive tailored suit, pacing the carpeted corridor with clenched fists.
He kept glaring toward the door as if he expected me to crumble in terror the moment I realized he was standing on the other side.
He still thought intimidation worked. He still believed I was the same quiet woman who stayed silent during Sunday dinners simply to keep the peace.
He couldn't have been more wrong.
I walked over to the dining table where my legal binder lay open. Beside my divorce decree sat a thick, black leather folder stamped with restricted federal inventory numbers.
Inside were certified forensic bank audits of every unauthorized transfer made during the final eighteen months of our marriage.
Every luxury jewelry purchase Eleanor had forged to my secondary line, every off-book cash withdrawal Anthony had assured me was an administrative mistake, every flight, every hotel suite, and every wire transfer.
All of it had been logged, categorized, and backed up on secure servers.
Outside, Eleanor began hammering against the wood with her umbrella handle.
"Open this door, Marissa! You owe this family! Anthony gave you his name, and you repay us by cutting off my cards like I'm a common thief?"
A faint, chilling smile crossed my face. Not because I enjoyed their spectacle, but because they still truly believed they were cornering an ordinary civilian.
They had no idea who they were pounding on.
I pulled open the door just enough to rest my hand against the frame, locking my eyes onto Anthony first.
Anthony stepped forward instantly, trying to use his height to crowd the doorway. "Do you have any idea what you've done? My mother spent two hours in a private holding office at Bergdorf while security verified her identity!"
"She should be grateful they didn't call the police," I replied coldly, not flinching an inch.
Eleanor shoved her way past her son, pointing a trembling, diamond-clad finger directly in my face. "You listen to me, you little upstart! You will unblock that account right now! I have standing reservations in Paris next week, and you are going to wire fifty thousand dollars to my personal checking before noon!"
"I am not wiring you a single cent, Eleanor," I said, my voice dangerously calm.
"You have to!" she shrieked, her voice echoing down the hallway for every neighbor on the floor to hear. "Anthony put five years of his life into your pathetic little consulting firm! You built your wealth on his connections!"
"His connections?" I let out a soft, sharp laugh. "Anthony works as a junior portfolio manager at a secondary hedge fund. The only reason he hasn't been fired for missing his quarterly quotas is because I personally guaranteed his firm's corporate lease through my private capital trust."
Anthony’s face turned an immediate, sickly shade of crimson. "Marissa, keep your voice down! That was a confidential family arrangement!"
"It was an arrangement between a parasite and a host," I replied, holding his gaze until he looked away.
"You took forty thousand dollars from my operational account three weeks ago, Anthony. You thought I was in Dubai on business and wouldn't notice the wire transfer."
Anthony swallowed hard, adjusting his tie with shaking fingers. "That was... that was an emergency liquidity loan for a high-yield tech fund! I was going to pay it back before the divorce finalized!"
May you like
"You didn't put it in a tech fund, Anthony," I said, pulling the door open wider so he could see the black folder resting on the dining table.
"You wired it to an offshore holding company registered in Delaware under the name of your twenty-six-year-old administrative assistant, Chloe."
