Chapter 2 - The Midnight Boardroom

Marcus Lin stepped into the Sapphire Room, but he didn't look at Daniel, and he certainly didn't acknowledge Vanessa, who was clinging to Daniel’s arm like a drowning passenger on a sinking ship. Instead, Marcus’s eyes darted toward the high-definition security cameras mounted in the corners of the ceiling.
""Daniel, hang up the phone,"" Marcus snapped, his voice barely above a whisper, though it came through the open mic with razor-sharp clarity.
""Marcus, thank God!"" Daniel lunged forward, grabbing the older executive by the lapel. ""The cards failed. Every single line of credit went dead at eight-forty! What the hell happened to the clearance override? You said Hayes Capital’s emergency line would cover the boutique wire before the daily audit batch ran!""
Marcus shoved Daniel’s hands off his coat with shocking violence. ""You idiot. I told you to buy the bonds quietly through the art brokerage account in Zurich tomorrow morning! Who authorized you to bring a mistress into Aurum House and drop a million dollars on a high-profile sapphire necklace while the court reporters were still filing the final decree?""
""It was supposed to look like a spousal celebration charge!"" Daniel hissed, wiping sweat from his forehead. ""If it looked like a messy post-divorce luxury splurge, Emily’s lawyers would have treated it as marital dissipation of assets during the ninety-day reconciliation grace period! It would have bought us three months to clean out the shell accounts!""
Across the table in our quiet suburban kitchen, my father let out a cold, humorless chuckle. ""Amateurs,"" he whispered. ""Greedy, reckless amateurs.""
""Who told you to change the PINs, Daniel?"" Marcus demanded, his jaw clenched tight. ""Emily doesn't check her financial balances. For five years, she let you handle the residential operating budget. She hasn't touched the backend merchant terminal since her mother died. Who tipped her off?""
""Nobody tipped her off!"" Daniel yelled, completely oblivious to the fact that the FaceTime connection was still active on his phone, which lay face-up on the silver dining tray. ""She’s probably sitting in her penthouse crying her eyes out! It must be an automated fraud lock from Chase! Just call the corporate desk and release the hold!""
""I can't,"" Marcus said, his voice dropping into sheer dread. ""I just checked my laptop in the car. The administrative credentials for Hayes Capital weren't locked by the bank. The master encryption keys were manually migrated to a cold-storage server forty-five minutes ago. Someone with Level-Ten administrative privileges physically revoked my corporate signature.""
Marcus stopped talking. His eyes widened behind his wire-rimmed glasses as realization hit him like a freight train.
""Richard,"" Marcus whispered to himself, the color instantly draining from his face. ""Richard Hayes is still on the enterprise deed.""
""What does that mean?"" Vanessa cried, her voice trembling. ""Marcus, what does that mean for our apartment? Daniel bought the penthouse on Fifty-Seventh Street under the corporate subsidiary! We move in on Monday!""
""Shut up, Vanessa!"" Marcus snarled. ""The penthouse isn't Daniel's. It was purchased through Hayes Holdings. If Richard has revoked the master credentials, every single asset tied to the corporate umbrella is frozen under New York commercial penal law. That includes Daniel's car, Daniel's expense lines, and the offshore accounts holding the art inventory.""
Right on cue, two burly men in tailored dark suits and Aurum House security pins entered the private dining room. Behind them stood two uniformed officers from the NYPD’s 19th Precinct.
""Mr. Daniel Whitmore?"" the leading officer asked, holding up a small clipboard.
Daniel tried to recover his courtroom swagger, puffing out his chest. ""Yes, officer. Look, there's been an unfortunate banking glitch with my family's private trust. My business partner, Mr. Lin, will settle the bill immediately.""
""Actually, Mr. Whitmore, we aren't here about the restaurant bill,"" the officer said calmly. ""We received a direct emergency dispatch from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Financial Frauds Bureau. A formal complaint of grand larceny and unauthorized corporate identity theft has just been lodged against you by Hayes Capital's majority shareholder.""
Vanessa shrieked. Marcus immediately took three steps backward, raising his hands in the air. ""Officers, I am merely external corporate counsel. I was called here to assist an employee. I have nothing to do with Mr. Whitmore’s personal transactions.""
""You coward!"" Daniel lunged toward Marcus, but the two security guards intercepted him, slamming him chest-first onto the antique mahogany dining table. Silverware clattered to the floor; crystal glasses shattered across the Persian rug.
Through the phone, I heard the metallic click of handcuffs snapping shut around Daniel’s wrists.

My father calmly reached across the table, tapped the red button on my phone, and ended the call.
""Put on your coat, Emily,"" Dad said, standing up and sliding his vintage trench coat over his shoulders. ""The police have him for the initial charge. Now we go to the office and find out what Marcus Lin really stole.""
