Chapter 10 - The Best Revenge

Six months later, the early summer breeze swept across the open terrace of Aurum House, carrying the sweet scent of jasmine and the distant hum of the Manhattan skyline.

The club had completely overhauled its executive concierge board following the scandal, and tonight, Hayes Capital was hosting its annual charity gala in the very same Sapphire Room where Daniel had tried to ruin me.

The room was filled with laughter, clinking crystal, and soft jazz. I wore an emerald-green silk gown, my hair swept up, laughing with a group of young female entrepreneurs whom Hayes Capital had recently agreed to fund through our new venture capital incubator.

My father walked out onto the terrace, holding two glasses of sparkling mineral water with lime. He handed one to me, leaning against the polished brass railing overlooking Central Park.

""A lovely evening, CEO Hayes,"" Dad teased gently.

""It really is, Dad,"" I replied, clinking my glass against his. ""How did the final bankruptcy settlement go this morning?""

Dad took a sip, a satisfied grin spreading across his face. ""The bankruptcy judge signed off on the liquidation of Daniel's remaining personal property at noon. Every single asset he tried to hide—his car collection, his luxury watches, his bespoke suits, even his membership rights at the country club—has been auctioned off to satisfy the remaining restitution orders.""

""And where is Daniel spending his summer?"" I asked lightly.

""He was transferred to the federal correctional facility in Otisville yesterday,"" Dad said. ""He's assigned to the prison laundry detail. Earning twelve cents an hour washing industrial bedsheets. Vanessa Cole was sentenced to five years in Danbury, and Marcus Lin is serving twenty in Pennsylvania.""

I looked down at the glittering city below. Six months ago, I had believed my life was ending on a cold bench outside a courtroom. I had thought that divorce was a badge of failure, a permanent scar of humiliation.

Now, I knew the truth. Losing Daniel was the greatest financial and personal investment I had ever made.

Just then, my assistant, Claire, stepped onto the terrace with a leather-bound guest check from the club manager.

""Excuse me, Emily,"" Claire said with a mischievous smile. ""The club manager wanted to know if you'd like to use the primary corporate card for tonight’s charity dinner.""

I took the bill, opened my evening clutch, and pulled out the newly issued, customized titanium Hayes Capital card. I handed it to Claire with a calm, radiant smile.

""Charge it to my account, Claire,"" I said. ""And tell the waiter that this time, the payment will clear without a hitch.""

My father laughed, wrapping an arm around my shoulder as the evening fireworks began to burst over Central Park, painting the night sky in brilliant shades of gold, sapphire, and emerald. I had reclaimed my family's name, protected our legacy, and discovered the unbreakable strength that had been inside me all along.

The past was paid in full. And my future had just begun."
