Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Guest

While Katherine was drafting our legal counter-strike, Emma was trying to survive her classes. She had officially withdrawn from the cheer squad, turning in her uniform to the athletic office during lunch.
Without the daily routine of after-school practice, Emma spent her afternoons at the public library near our house, studying for her AP exams and working on her college application essays. Her dream had always been to attend the University of Michigan to study biomedical engineering, a program that required top-tier grades and an immaculate personal record.
On Thursday afternoon, while Emma was sitting at a quiet corner table in the library with her laptop and textbooks, the chair across from her scraped against the carpet.
Emma looked up, expecting the librarian.
It was Lauren.
Lauren sat down smoothly, placing an expensive leather handbag on the oak table. She was wearing a tailored cream blazer, her hair styled to perfection, smelling of expensive French perfume that had no place in a quiet municipal library.
Emma instinctively closed her laptop screen halfway. ""What are you doing here?""
""Keep your voice down, Emma. This is a library,"" Lauren whispered, leaning forward with a tight, plastic smile. ""I came here because your mother is acting completely unhinged, and somebody has to be the adult in this situation.""
""My mom isn't unhinged. Leave me alone, Lauren, or I’ll tell the desk clerk.""
""Go ahead,"" Lauren said dismissively. ""Tell them your stepmother sat down to have a conversation with you. See how much they care."" Lauren rested her manicured hands on the table, her diamond wedding ring catching the light. ""I saw the legal response your mother’s lawyer filed this morning. Do you have any idea what you're doing to your father?""
Emma stared at her, refusing to answer.
""Your father works eighty hours a week to provide for his family,"" Lauren continued, her voice dropping into a venomous, quiet hiss. ""He pays for your health insurance. He pays child support to your mother, who clearly spends it on fancy clothes instead of saving for your future. And now your mother is trying to drag his business through an audit just because David’s attention wasn't on you for five minutes on a football field.""
""He lied to me,"" Emma whispered, her hands balling into fists beneath the table. ""He promised me.""
""He walked with Harper because Harper had an emergency!"" Lauren snapped, her eyes narrowing behind her mascara. ""Harper is sensitive. Harper has suffered real trauma from an absent father. You have had everything handed to you on a silver platter your entire life. You are acting like a spoiled, selfish brat, Emma. And if your mother continues with this lawsuit, David is going to lose his partnership. If he loses his partnership, do you think he’s going to pay for your tuition at Michigan?""
Emma went pale. ""My tuition?""
""David hasn't signed the parent plus loan agreement yet,"" Lauren said, a triumphant gleam in her eyes. ""He was going to pay half your tuition out of pocket as a graduation gift. But why should he invest sixty thousand dollars in a daughter who treats him like a criminal? You call your mother right now. You tell her to drop the financial audit and drop the child support claims, or you can kiss Michigan goodbye. You can take out student loans and go to the community college down the road like everyone else.""
Emma’s breathing turned shallow. The threat was explicit, cold, and calculated. Lauren wasn't just defending David; she was actively holding Emma’s entire future hostage to protect her family’s wealth.
""Are you done?"" Emma asked, her voice shaking with controlled fury.
Lauren blinked, surprised by the lack of tears. ""I expect you to talk to your mother tonight.""
Emma reached out and picked up her phone from the table. She tapped the screen, stopped a recording that had been running for six minutes, and looked Lauren dead in the eyes.
""The state of Ohio is a one-party consent recording state, Lauren,"" Emma said calmly, holding up the phone to display the audio wave file. ""My AP Government teacher covered that two weeks ago. You just came into a public library, threatened a minor with financial retaliation, and tried to coerce me into interfering with an active court proceeding.""
Lauren’s face drained of color. She stood up so quickly her chair screeched against the floorboards, drawing sharp looks from the students two tables away.
""You little snake,"" Lauren hissed under her breath.
May you like
""Get away from me,"" Emma said, her voice steady and clear. ""Before I play this for the entire library.""
Lauren grabbed her designer bag and practically sprinted toward the library exit, her heels clicking frantically against the tile floor. Emma sat alone at the table, her hands trembling violently, but for the first time all week, she didn't cry. She emailed the audio file directly to Katherine Vance.
